An anonymous writer has offered to cover the rent shortfall for Maricarmen, an 87-year-old Retiro resident facing eviction after 71 years in her home. The owner must now decide whether to accept the offer.
An anonymous writer has offered to pay most of Maricarmen's rent just before her fourth scheduled eviction attempt in Madrid. The Retiro resident has lived in the apartment for about seven decades and says she does not want to leave. The offer puts the building's owner, Urbagestión Desarrollo e Inversión S. L., under pressure before Wednesday morning's planned eviction.
Maricarmen would continue paying the 500 euros she pays each month. The writer would cover the 2,150-euro difference between that amount and the 2,650 euros demanded by the property owner. According to the Sindicato de Inquilinas de Madrid, the writer has offered to keep paying the difference for the rest of Maricarmen's life.
The mobilisation drew people from politics and the arts, including communicator Inés Hernand and singer and actress Ana Belén. Ana Belén said accompanying Maricarmen was the least anyone could do. She also questioned why more people were not there.
Maricarmen spoke to the crowd herself. She said the attempt to remove her was driven by money. She stressed that she had spent 71 years in the home. She also has a recognised disability of 50 percent.
After thanking the tenant union for its support, Maricarmen urged people facing housing problems to organise instead of remaining isolated.
The case now turns on a simple financial proposal. Maricarmen would pay 500 euros. The anonymous writer would provide 2,150 euros to meet the owner's 2,650-euro demand.
The offer is still only a proposal. Until Urbagestión accepts it, the eviction remains scheduled. The overnight mobilisation is the tenants' immediate defence. An EFE report carried by Infobae said the writer's offer could remain in force for the rest of Maricarmen's life.
Political pressure has spread beyond the immediate dispute. Sumar has called for Maricarmen to receive access to affordable housing in the public housing system. The case has become part of a wider debate over protection for elderly tenants and the lack of public housing alternatives.
A private writer has offered a way for Maricarmen to stay. The property owner has not agreed to it. That leaves the decisive choice with Urbagestión as the fourth eviction attempt approaches.
