Several regions in northeastern Spain are under threat from severe thunderstorms, hail, and sudden gusts of wind. According to El Pais, heavy rainfall and localized storms are expected on Monday in the Ebro Valley, Navarre, the Iberico system, and the Pyrenees. Some areas may experience downpours with hail and squally winds, while in the eastern Pyrenees, brief but intense rain is forecast.
The Aemet agency has issued a yellow weather alert from 1:00 p.m. on Monday for the provinces of Huesca, Barcelona, Girona, Lleida, Navarre, and La Rioja. This signals a low but real probability of hazardous weather events. Authorities warn of risks for transport and recommend that residents remain cautious when planning trips and outings.
Abnormal heat and dust from Africa
Against a backdrop of unstable weather across Spain, abnormally high temperatures for April persist. Throughout the week, maximum values will exceed 25°C almost everywhere, and in the south, thermometers may reach up to 34°C. The sharp rise in temperature is caused by a mass of subtropical air arriving from the south, bringing not only heat but also dust to the atmosphere. An increase in calima — airborne dust — is expected over most of the Iberian Peninsula during the day, while in the Canary Islands, this effect is gradually fading.
Regional differences
Despite the general warming trend, local changes are possible in certain regions. In Galicia and Ampurdán, daytime temperatures will drop slightly, while in the Canary Islands, a marked cooling is expected—by more than 6°C. The inland areas of the Basque Country, Cantabria, the north of Burgos, and the upper Ebro will, on the contrary, experience an increase in nighttime temperatures. No significant changes are forecast for the rest of the country.
Wind and cloud cover
Inland, winds will be light and variable, while a moderate Levante is expected in the area of the Strait of Gibraltar. The Canary Islands will continue to experience a moderate westerly wind. In the morning, low clouds are possible along the Cantabrian and Mediterranean coasts, but overall, the weather remains clear or only slightly cloudy across the country.
According to El Pais, this week will be yet another example of summer heat in mid-spring, accompanied by instability and weather anomalies in certain regions.
