Desigual is rebuilding its business after a sharp decline. Digital sales and younger customers offer early signs of recovery, but the company still has to turn that change into steady growth.
Desigual is rebuilding its business after losing the formula that once made it one of Spain's most promising fashion companies. The brand now attracts a younger customer. Digital sales account for around 44% of its business. Its financial results, though, remain far below the peak reached a decade ago.
The recovery plan enters its first year in 2026. The transformation began in 2019. The goals are straightforward: develop products faster, strengthen the brand and return to solid, sustainable growth. Desigual is also using collaborations and artificial intelligence to shorten the gap between designing a garment and getting it to market.
Desigual сохраняет заметное офлайн-присутствие: по данным справочника локаций, только в Мадриде у бренда насчитывается восемь точек продаж.
The shift follows a long retreat. Desigual reached its high point in 2014, with revenue of 963.5 million euros and a profit of 134.9 million euros. Even then, the business was showing weaknesses. The product range seemed repetitive. Customers were getting older. Sales and earnings began to fall.
The decline led to layoffs and departures. In 2018, founder Thomas Meyer bought back the stake held by the fund Eurazeo and regained control of the company. Desigual remains a private company based in Barcelona. Industry summaries also identify 1984 as the year it was founded.
The current strategy focuses on changing the product, not simply giving the brand a new look.
Stores were redesigned. The logo was turned around, and the company was resized. Desigual also changed its product range and sales channels as it pursued younger shoppers. The average customer is now about 38 years old, more than 10 years younger than before. Company sources describe that shift as one of the clearest signs that the transformation is working because it gives the brand more room to grow over time.
The repositioning can be seen in recent campaigns. Vivian Jenna Wilson appeared in an advertisement that challenged obedience and perfect models. In it, she destroyed a robot and made pointed references to her conflict with her father. Irina Shayk, Demi Lovato, Zara Larsson, Ester Expósito and Nicki Nicole have also been among the models associated with the brand at different stages.
Some attempts have worked less well. A separate campaign drew criticism for treating Barcelona's gentrification and mass tourism problems too lightly. The episode showed how hard it is to turn rebellion into a commercial message without provoking a backlash.
Desigual is seeking fresh momentum through capsule collaborations with international names such as Berlin-based Ottolinger and Ukrainian designer Masha Popova. The company also considered buying Pronovias when the bridalwear business was close to insolvency proceedings. The deal eventually went to the fund Cap Capital. Desigual said the operation was an interesting opportunity, not a requirement for its strategy.
The financial recovery is still modest. Desigual recorded a net profit of 313,000 euros and revenue of 332 million euros in 2024. Sales through its own channels grew organically by 2.6% last year, compared with 1.3% in 2024. Total reported sales fell by one digit because the company continued to reduce its store network as leases expired. Desigual says net profit in 2025 was again positive and nearly three times higher than in 2024. The figures in the recent private-company comparison, including estimated revenue of about 952 million dollars, are external market estimates. They do not replace the company's reported 2024 accounts.
Sales abroad offer a brighter picture. They are growing between 11% and 50% in the United States, the United Kingdom, China and Japan. Spain, Italy, Germany and France are moving more slowly, with growth between 4% and 7%.
The next challenge is speed. Desigual wants design and production cycles to take less than six months. That would bring collections closer to what the market wants. Artificial intelligence is expected to help with the process, but the figures show that the turnaround is not finished.
Desigual has shown that it can build a strong identity and sell it internationally. The problem was that its old formula stopped attracting enough younger customers. It also failed to protect sales and profitability. The current plan has a clear basis: the customer base has changed, digital sales are growing and product cycles are getting shorter. Still, the gap between 332 million euros in 2024 revenue and the 963.5 million euros reached in 2014 is large. The brand is not back at its peak. It is trying to earn the right to grow again.
