Spain’s roads are set for one of the busiest weekends of the year, with the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) forecasting 5.6 million vehicle journeys from 15:00 on Friday until midnight Sunday. The surge coincides with the mid-August holiday, local festivals and the traditional changeover of holidaymakers, as some travelers return while others begin their trips. These overlapping journeys are expected to put pressure on major routes and roads serving beaches, resorts and festival towns.
The DGT’s special summer operation will run from 15:00 on Friday until midnight Sunday. Authorities have highlighted conventional roads and night-time travel as particular risks. Many secondary routes are single carriageways, with opposing traffic separated by little or no physical barrier. The warning follows a particularly deadly previous weekend, when 16 fatal crashes claimed 19 lives, including six motorcyclists and cyclists. Most of the crashes occurred on conventional roads; the remainder took place on motorways and expressways.
To address the heightened risk, the Guardia Civil’s traffic division will step up checks for speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The DGT is also deploying reversible and additional lanes marked with cones during peak periods, suspending roadworks and restricting heavy goods vehicles and vehicles carrying dangerous materials on certain routes and at specified times. Sporting events and other activities that could obstruct traffic will be limited, while alternative routes will be signposted to ease pressure on basic arteries.
Travelers are urged to plan their journeys and, where possible, avoid the predicted peaks. The DGT expects the heaviest congestion on Friday from 16:00 to 23:00, particularly on routes leaving major cities for coastal and holiday destinations. Beach-bound roads are expected to be busiest on Saturday morning. On Sunday, short trips to the coast in the morning will overlap with journeys back to urban centers, with the basic return-traffic peak forecast from 18:00 to 23:00.
Authorities are emphasizing basic safety measures: wear seat belts and helmets, observe speed limits, and never lead under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The DGT also reminds drivers that even short, familiar journeys require care.
