National governments are being asked to prepare another round of gas and electricity savings before winter. Public heating and peak-hour power use are again under review as energy markets face supply pressure.
Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen sent a request to ministers from the 27 member states in a letter dated 25 September. He says there are no immediate risks to security of supply. He is still urging national capitals to act early, before markets deteriorate.
The European Commission wants governments to have measures ready to cut gas and electricity demand. The steps would help protect storage levels while international energy markets remain exposed to supply pressure. The request is voluntary. Household costs and heating in public buildings are again at the centre of Europe's winter planning.
