Extremadura is accepting applications for its Cheque Guardería, a grant of up to €2,400 per child for the 2026/2027 school year. For the first time, the scheme covers the full first cycle of early childhood education, from birth to age three. The regional government has allocated €6.4 million to the program. There is no income threshold: all families meeting the residency and enrollment requirements can apply.
The biggest change this year is the inclusion of infants aged 0 to 1, making every year of the first cycle eligible. Children must attend non-free public nurseries or authorized private centers. Families must live in Extremadura or have official status as Extremadurans living abroad. Each child also needs a tax identification number, even if it is provisional.

The grant provides up to €200 per month for 12 months, though the amount depends on the family's nursery expenses. At public nurseries run by the Junta, it may cover the full monthly fee. For municipal centers, the grant can match the local rate. At private centers, it is based on the educational care fee. Food costs are eligible when included in the standard charge. The grant cannot exceed the family's actual outlay, and voluntary extra services are excluded.

How to Apply
Families can apply online or in person from August 7 to October 7, 2026. First, they must register the child as a third-party beneficiary. They must also provide a nursery certificate confirming the monthly fees and enrollment period, along with a responsible declaration. Proof of compliance with tax and social security obligations is required. The administration may verify some information directly if the applicant authorizes it.
Payments will arrive in three installments over the school year. The first is an advance covering September to November. Later payments require proof that the fees have been paid. If the administration issues no decision within three months, the application is considered rejected by default.

The Cheque Guardería can be combined with other childcare subsidies, as long as the total does not exceed the actual cost of schooling.
