A violent attack late at night in Madrid’s Ciudad Lineal district left a 23-year-old man dead and two 17-year-olds seriously injured. It happened around 11 p.m. on Calle Elfo. Police are investigating whether the assault was an escalation of ongoing youth gang conflicts in the city.
Witnesses said at least three young assailants ambushed the victims after hiding in a building entrance. The attackers, reportedly armed with knives and machetes, waited for their targets before launching a sudden assault. They fled on electric scooters, a method increasingly common in recent gang-related incidents involving young people in Madrid.
The deceased, identified as D. C., was a 23-year-old Spanish national who worked in construction. Police sources said he had prior records linked to the Trinitarios gang. Emergency medical teams tried to resuscitate him for several minutes, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The two injured minors, one Colombian and one Peruvian, were both 17 and had no criminal records. They were taken to hospital in serious condition. One suffered a stab wound to the chest and two to the back, suggesting the attack came from behind.
The assault took place in a small park near a bar terrace and several nightlife venues, bringing violence close to public spaces frequented by residents and visitors. The National Police homicide unit is leading the investigation. No arrests have been made, and the weapon used in the killing has not been recovered.
Initial findings point to a premeditated, organized attack in which the assailants took the group by surprise. The pattern of violence, including the use of scooters to escape, mirrors previous incidents attributed to youth gangs in Madrid. If police confirm a gang link, this would be the second fatality connected to such conflicts in the city this year. Earlier, a 17-year-old named Diler was stabbed to death in Entrevías in broad daylight. The assailant also escaped on a scooter.
Madrid has seen more violent confrontations between youth gangs in recent years, while authorities have struggled to contain organized group violence. Attacks in public spaces and the involvement of increasingly younger people have raised concerns about safety and the effectiveness of current prevention measures. Recent figures from Catalonia offer a measure of the wider challenge, though they do not establish a link to the Calle Elfo attack. In an assessment reported by Ara in October 2026, the Mossos d’Esquadra estimated that about 1,000 young people were within the orbit of youth gangs, with roughly half considered direct members. Police identified 34 active groups. Trinitarios, Los 300/PGS and Barrio 18 together accounted for 66% of those linked to gangs. The assessment also identified three homicides in Catalonia since 2023 as clearly connected to gang dynamics, while distinguishing those cases from the larger number of fights still being classified.
The Catalan police assessment reflects a regional picture, not official Madrid statistics. Ara reported that Madrid was among the places where police first observed the gangs’ resurgence. The Mossos planned a dedicated youth-gang action plan for November 2026 after months of investigative work drawing on more than 600 sources, including incident reports and informants. One stated aim was to determine how many fights in Catalonia each year could be attributed to youth gangs.
Separate reporting by ABC has described Trinitarios, Barrio 18 and Los 300 as major violent groups under scrutiny in Catalonia, amid concern about the potential consequences if their access to firearms grew alongside the use of knives and other weapons. In a separate operation in Catalonia in December 2025, El Periódico reported 19 arrests in a case involving alleged targeted attacks, violent robberies, drug trafficking, commissioned assaults and attempted homicides, with firearms reportedly involved. These developments illustrate the range of concerns facing police in Spain, while remaining distinct from the investigation into the Madrid stabbing.
