Fernando Alonso’s daily car in Monaco is anything but ordinary. The Aston Martin DBX S, delivered to him in January, is the most powerful SUV the brand has built so far. It’s now Alonso’s go-to for getting around the city’s tight, winding streets.
Mechanic Pedro Bastida recently shared a video on Instagram, giving a look at the DBX S from underneath. He pointed out the underbody protection, front suspension, and other technical details that make this model different. Bastida joked that it’s “the car to go buy bread,” a nod to the DBX S’s unusual mix of everyday practicality and serious performance.
According to official Aston Martin communications, the DBX S is not just a special edition but the new flagship of the DBX lineup, featuring technical solutions borrowed from the Valhalla hypercar.
Alonso’s DBX S arrived in black, joining a garage already filled with high-performance cars from his racing career and his work with Aston Martin. The company marked the handover with a social media post, and Alonso replied simply: “Excepcional.” On a recent holiday, he was also seen driving a Ferrari LaFerrari and the Aston Martin Valiant, a model he helped develop. Still, the DBX S stands out for its SUV size and comfort, while offering acceleration and top speed numbers that match many supercars.
The DBX S uses a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine with 727 horsepower and 900 Nm of torque. The engine, paired with a new exhaust and turbocharging tech from the Valhalla, gets the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and up to 310 km/h. Compared to earlier DBX models, the S version adds 20 horsepower and is three-tenths quicker to 200 km/h, thanks to a recalibrated nine-speed wet-clutch transmission and an all-wheel-drive system that can send all the torque to the rear wheels.
The upgrades go beyond the engine. The steering is 4% more direct, and the air suspension and electronic dampers are tuned specifically for this model. Braking comes from carbon-ceramic discs—420 mm at the front, 390 mm at the rear—so the two-ton SUV can stop as well as it goes. The exterior has a Vaned grille, a new front splitter, diffuser, side sills, quad exhausts, and “S” badges. Carbon fiber is used for the roof and other parts to cut weight and lower the center of gravity. Standard 23-inch aluminum wheels can be swapped for magnesium to reduce unsprung mass and improve handling.
Recent reports from BBC Sport and Sky Sports F1 highlight that while Alonso is closely associated with the DBX S through official Aston Martin communications, the main topic in the F1 world remains his future with the team. As of now, Alonso has not made a decision regarding his contract for 2027, and discussions about his potential extension are ongoing.
Inside, the DBX S keeps the focus on luxury. The seats have a herringbone pattern, with Alcantara and semi-aniline leather in high-wear areas. The interior can be customized further, including the option to extend the herringbone design to the roof. Alonso was also recently seen in Monaco driving a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse with polished aluminum bodywork, another rare sight on the streets.
