A violent confrontation in Lleida led to five arrests, including four minors, after a mass brawl between local shopkeepers and suspected thieves. The incident took place late Saturday at the roundabout between Rosa Parks and Sant Ruf avenues. Five people suffered minor injuries, and police mounted a impressive response.
Police sources said the only adult detained was a shopkeeper who had previously been a victim of theft. He faces an attempted homicide charge over injuries sustained during the altercation. The four minors arrested are suspected of a series of recent robberies targeting businesses in the city.
The clash followed a string of thefts in Lleida in recent weeks. On Friday, August 14, Mossos d'Esquadra detained two minors suspected of involvement in robberies dating back to mid-July. Both were released, but tensions flared the next day, leading to the large-scale fight and the shopkeeper's arrest. The situation remained tense on Sunday, when police detained two more minors, one for a new shop theft and the other for an attempted robbery.
Police sources said most of the affected shopkeepers are of Pakistani and Indian origin, while the suspected perpetrators are mainly Spanish and Maghrebi youths. In response, authorities launched a preventive security operation in several neighborhoods, including Clot and Balàfia, as well as Pardinyes and Parc de les Vies. Mossos d'Esquadra and local police units took part.
A separate violent incident took place on September 16 at Plaça dels Pagesos in the Mariola district. Segre reported that roughly a dozen people fought there, leaving six injured, five with wounds from bladed weapons. Mossos d'Esquadra received an emergency call at about 7 a.m. and made an initial arrest shortly afterward. The investigation was opened on suspicion of attempted homicide and causing injuries. Two detainees, aged 22 and 24, were remanded in custody on September 19. In October, police arrested a third 22-year-old suspect on Carrer Saturn, near the square.
Broader police activity has also included coordinated operations across several parts of Lleida. In an Operatiu Kanpai reported by Segre, about 70 personnel from Mossos d'Esquadra and Guàrdia Urbana took part, alongside Policía Nacional, Guardia Civil and the labour inspectorate. They identified 281 people, whose records collectively included 1,230 police antecedents, and made three arrests. The operation produced 15 administrative reports for drug possession and six for possession of bladed weapons, as well as three for disobedience. Officers also opened two criminal investigations involving disobedience or resistance. Those figures describe the citywide operation, not the Rosa Parks and Sant Ruf confrontation.
The Kanpai operation covered Carrer Remolins and the Eix Comercial, as well as Carrer Alfred Perenya, the area around Parc de les Vies and a nightlife venue on Avinguda de les Garrigues. One person was arrested over alleged sexual touching of two women in a nightclub. Another was arrested for theft, and a third under a judicial warrant. The two detainees arrested for theft and under the warrant had 33 prior police records between them, Segre reported. Authorities also inspected three commercial premises and issued 22 administrative complaints related to tax and labour rules.
