A sudden surge of floodwater has left the streets of Madrigueras underwater, trapping people in buildings and sweeping away cars. Emergency services are responding to over a hundred calls as the town faces severe disruption.

Water crashed through Madrigueras on Friday evening. Cars floated down the streets. People watched as their homes and businesses filled with muddy water. In just a few hours, the town in Albacete changed completely. The rain hit hard and fast. Streets vanished under water. Residents found themselves stuck inside flooded buildings. The town was caught off guard.

Emergency services got more than a hundred calls for help. The regional 112 service said the flood swept away vehicles and damaged property. So far, there are no reports of injuries. But officials say it is too soon to know if everyone is safe. The real toll could still rise. EFE and ABC reported that 112 registered 108 calls about water pouring into homes, basements, garages, and shops. The numbers show just how serious the situation became.

The regional government of Castilla-La Mancha expanded the Meteocam emergency plan to cover the entire region in alert mode before the flooding began.

María Victoria Leal Utiel, a local councillor, called the flooding unlike anything she had seen before. She told EFE the trouble started around 6 p.m. A sudden storm dumped heavy rain on the town. "It has rained so much that the whole town is flooded. The municipality is under half a meter of water, which has dragged cars and left people trapped in some facilities," she said. Her words matched the videos spreading online. The water moved with force, sweeping through the streets. Some local sources, as reported by the media, said water reached up to two meters deep in low-lying spots. That number is still an early estimate.

Warnings went out before the storm. The local council sent a mobile alert urging people to be careful. The regional government activated the METEOCAM plan, expecting bad weather. An ES-Alert also went out across La Manchuela, telling people not to travel unless they had to. Still, the rain came faster and heavier than most expected. ABC and Cadena SER reported that the ES-Alert system notified people in Madrigueras and nearby towns, advising them to stay put during the worst of the storm.

Firefighters from La Roda and Casas Ibáñez rushed in to help. More crews were on the way from Hellín and Almansa. The Guardia Civil closed roads into Madrigueras. They wanted to keep people safe and let rescue teams reach those trapped by the flood.

Meteorological forecasts from AEMET had already placed Albacete and surrounding areas under yellow and orange alerts for heavy rain and storms on October 1, with local media warning of possible rainfall intensities up to 30 mm per hour for La Mancha Albaceteña. These conditions contributed to the rapid and unexpected rise in water levels.

Right now, rescue and damage control come first. The flood showed how quickly small towns can be overwhelmed by sudden storms. Local officials faced tough choices as the situation changed by the minute. The clean-up will take time. Restoring safety is the top priority. Only then will the true scale of the damage become clear. Madrigueras learned a hard lesson. Even with warnings, severe weather can still take control.
