Officials said the five detainees, aged 21 to 41, were heavily armed to protect their shipment from rival criminal groups. They were not armed to confront police. Such weapons are strictly banned for civilians in Spain. The Guardia Civil noted that the automatic rifle and light machine gun found on board were meant to defend against competing organizations, reflecting a trend toward greater armament among traffickers in the Atlantic corridor.
The suspects face drug-trafficking and serious-disobedience charges, along with counts involving illegal firearm possession and membership in a criminal organization. The case has moved to the judicial phase, with the accused appearing before a judge in Las Palmas. Authorities have not released the nationalities of those arrested.
