IU says the Frente Amplio should contest every constituency, including Teruel. It warns that standing aside could give Podemos room to attract voters to the PSOE’s left. Lists can be filed until Monday 26.

Podemos is prepared to stand alone in 47 constituencies. That prospect sharpens IU’s opposition to leaving smaller provinces uncontested. The party says the Frente Amplio must run in Teruel and elsewhere, rather than withdraw to concentrate left-wing support behind the PSOE.

The immediate dispute follows Chunta’s willingness to stand aside in Aragón. Its stated aim is to reduce the splitting of left-wing votes and help secure a progressive majority. IU, which would be part of any arrangement with Chunta, has rejected that course and plans to field its own list against both the PSOE and Podemos.

The Frente Amplio was registered six days before the report, bringing together IU and Más Madrid, with Catalunya en Comú and Movimiento Sumar also in the coalition. Eleven other left-wing parties from across Spain joined as well. The deadline for filing candidate lists in each constituency opened on 21 October and runs until Monday 26.

The argument is especially sharp in provinces with fewer than seven parliamentary seats. A joint strategy for Congress had been floated after the socialists agreed a Senate coalition with the groups under the name Senado de Progreso. That agreement does not itself settle how the parties will contest the lower house.

IU Aragón has rejected ceding ground to the PSOE and says it will work to prevent that outcome. Its regional coordinator, Marta Abengochea, has argued that the party should represent workers across Aragón, including in places where winning representation is harder. She has also maintained that Teruel should not be treated as a second-tier province. In her view, electoral rules should not determine whether voters’ political diversity is represented.

Federal coordinator Antonio Maíllo criticised the proposed concession before the Frente Amplio Aragón announcement. IU says it has a stronger historical presence in this political space outside Madrid. It also points to Cataluña, Comunidad Valenciana and Baleares. The burden of stepping aside would therefore fall unevenly: the source says regional partner parties and Movimiento Sumar would not be affected in the same way, with Sumar lacking a strong presence since its creation in 2023.

The PSOE’s role in electoral calculations has featured in other political disputes, including Javier Milei’s accusation, covered in a report on Sánchez, that migration was being used for electoral gain. Here, IU’s stated concern is that withdrawing without Podemos could leave a space to the left of the PSOE that Podemos might eventually capture.
