La Séptima has put new presenter signings on hold, waiting for Javier Ruiz to join its leadership team. The channel, set to launch nationwide in November 2026, plans a lineup with a female majority and a focus on live news and analysis.

La Séptima has temporarily halted the recruitment of new presenters, choosing to wait until Javier Ruiz officially joins its executive team. This decision comes as the channel prepares for its national debut on Spain’s digital terrestrial television (TDT) on November 5, 2026. According to Confidencial Digital, the move is designed to give Ruiz, who will serve as both editorial director and on-air talent, a direct role in selecting the final group of eight or nine main presenters.

The channel’s leadership aims for a lineup with more women than men, reflecting a deliberate shift in on-screen representation. Daniel Fernández, previously director of Mañaneros 360 at RTVE, will oversee content and coordinate programming. His responsibilities will span both news and entertainment, a structure that differs from the traditional separation seen at other Spanish broadcasters. Fernández and Ruiz have worked together before, and their partnership is expected to shape the channel’s editorial direction.

Presenter Selection on Hold

The first wave of presenter negotiations concluded after Ruiz’s departure from Mañaneros 360, with his arrival at La Séptima marking a new phase. While earlier reports mentioned talks with up to fourteen journalists, the final roster will focus on eight or nine key faces, prioritizing a mix of experienced professionals and younger journalists under 30. Notably, Silvia Intxaurrondo and Àngels Barceló are not expected to join in the initial stage.

Live News at the Core

La Séptima’s programming will center on live news, analysis, and debate, steering clear of scripted series, films, or large-scale entertainment formats. The editorial team, led by José Miguel Contreras, emphasizes a selection process based on genuine enthusiasm for the project. The schedule will also include coverage of sports, society, and culture, but only when these topics intersect with current affairs. The channel plans to clearly separate factual reporting from opinion segments, aiming for transparency in its editorial approach.

Sarah Santaolalla Among Candidates

Sarah Santaolalla is one of the profiles under consideration, having received an offer from La Séptima. Her exact role remains undefined, with the possibility of hosting her own program. TVE is reportedly open to maintaining her collaborations if schedules allow. Santaolalla’s recent social media posts, including a farewell to Javier Ruiz, have fueled speculation, but there is no official confirmation of her move or details about the proposed format.

Technical Launch and Audience Goals

The channel’s launch coincides with a nationwide reorganization of TDT frequencies, requiring viewers to retune their televisions on November 5. La Séptima will broadcast in HD from San Sebastián de los Reyes, operating from a studio of over 1,000 square meters. The initial staff is expected to number around 300, including 80 journalists. The channel’s goal is to reach a 2% audience share at launch and surpass 3% within its first year. The state license was awarded in May 2026 to Servicios Integrados Entretenimiento Televisivo.

La Séptima’s approach—delaying key hires to involve its new editorial director—signals a commitment to building a distinctive, live-focused news channel. As the Spanish television landscape prepares for technical changes and new entrants, the channel’s strategy will be closely watched by industry observers.
