The Community of Madrid’s acquisition of a luxury penthouse for Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s temporary office has triggered sharp criticism from opposition parties. The lack of cost transparency and previous controversial purchases fuel the dispute.

The decision by the Community of Madrid to acquire a high-end penthouse in Chamberí for Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s temporary office has ignited a fierce political row. Opposition leaders are demanding explanations after the regional government confirmed the purchase but withheld details on the final price. The property, located on Paseo del General Martínez Campos and spanning 485 square metres with a 199-square-metre terrace, is estimated to be worth several million euros according to market rates.

Óscar López, Minister for Digital Transformation and Secretary General of the PSOE in Madrid, sharply criticised the move, highlighting that this is not the first time public funds have been used for luxury real estate. He referenced the 2023 purchase of a chalet in Rascafría for €4.3 million, which, as reported by EL PAÍS, was also used by Ayuso and her family. López questioned the priorities of the regional government, pointing to spending cuts in fire prevention while millions are allocated to exclusive properties. He called for immediate clarification during a live interview on La Hora de la 1 on RTVE.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente echoed the criticism, posting a blunt message on social media that accused Ayuso of mocking the public with such expenditures. The controversy has also drawn in Más Madrid, with parliamentary spokesperson Manuela Bergerot denouncing what she described as Ayuso’s “third penthouse in Chamberí.” Bergerot noted that, unlike previous cases involving private healthcare group Quirón, this purchase is funded entirely by taxpayers, including the expansive terrace intended for official receptions. She also referenced financial links between Ayuso’s partner and Quirón, citing a recent tax report that revealed €4.4 million in payments over three years.

The regional government has justified the acquisition by stating that Ayuso requires a workspace during the upcoming renovation of the Real Casa de Correos, the seat of the Madrid executive, with construction scheduled to begin in August. However, officials have not confirmed whether the penthouse will ultimately serve as Ayuso’s office, leaving the future use of the property uncertain. Rita Maestre, Más Madrid’s municipal spokesperson, added that at least the funding source for this penthouse is clear, but called for the government to disclose the exact cost to the public.

This is not the first time the Community of Madrid’s real estate decisions have come under scrutiny. Earlier this year, a previous report detailed the Chamberí penthouse purchase, raising questions about transparency and budgetary oversight. The pattern of acquiring high-value properties for official use continues to fuel debate over public spending priorities in the region.

For context, the Real Casa de Correos is the historic headquarters of the Madrid regional government, and its renovation is expected to disrupt normal operations for several months. The Chamberí district, known for its exclusivity and high property values, has become a focal point in the ongoing dispute over the use of public funds for government officials’ accommodations. The opposition’s demands for transparency and accountability reflect broader concerns about fiscal management and the allocation of resources in Madrid’s administration.
