Maricarmen Abascal died in Madrid after her eviction. Her case sparked protests across Spain and pushed housing to the centre of the country's political crisis.

The Sindicato de Inquilinas confirmed Maricarmen Abascal's death on 7 October 2026 at Madrid's Gregorio Marañón hospital. The official cause has not been made public. Abascal, 87, had remained in hospital since 23 September, when she was removed from the flat where she had lived for more than seven decades.

The eviction came after the government proposed urgent housing measures. The collapse of two decrees also helped prompt Pedro Sánchez to call early general elections for 29 November.

Officials carried out the eviction on the fourth attempt after years of legal action between Abascal and Urbagestión, the investment company that owned the property. The 92-square-metre flat is on Alcalde Sainz de Baranda in Madrid's Retiro district. Abascal had lived there for almost all her life. Reports described her as having a 50% disability and serious mobility problems.
