Marta Ortega, chair of Inditex since 2022, draws on her father Amancio Ortega’s advice to keep the company grounded and ambitious. Her approach blends humility, constant work, and readiness for change, as revealed in a recent interview and the 2025 annual report.

When Marta Ortega stepped into the role of non-executive chair at Inditex in April 2022, she brought with her more than a famous surname. The daughter of Amancio Ortega, founder of the world’s largest fashion retailer, has made it clear that her leadership is rooted in values learned from her family and years spent inside the company’s operations.

In a recent interview with El País, Ortega reflected on the principles that continue to shape her approach. She emphasized humility, daily effort, and the importance of staying prepared for any scenario—an attitude she credits to her father. “We don’t like to think we’ve achieved everything,” she noted, describing a culture that resists complacency even at the top of global retail.

Clarifying the Message

While some reports have attributed the phrase “humility, prudence, and ambition” to Marta Ortega, the original interview reveals a different story. That formula was actually articulated by Óscar García Maceiras, Inditex’s CEO, when asked about the company’s DNA and Amancio Ortega’s influence. Marta Ortega, for her part, focused on humility, hard work, and anticipation—values she sees as essential to Inditex’s ongoing evolution.

This distinction matters. García Maceiras spoke about the broader corporate culture, while Ortega’s comments were more personal, rooted in her own experience and family background. She recalled weekends spent at company facilities with her father, and highlighted the professional example set by her mother, Flora Pérez Marcote, and her grandmother, a seamstress. Fashion, she said, has been part of her life since childhood, shaping her perspective on the business from an early age.

From Shop Floor to Boardroom

Ortega’s path to the top was not a straight line. After graduating in International Business from Regent’s University London, she joined Inditex in 2007, starting with six months on the shop floor at Zara’s King’s Road store in London. She then spent nine months visiting stores across the UK, gaining firsthand insight into daily operations. Later, she moved into product design and development for Zara Woman, before focusing on brand strategy and image.

Despite her prominent role, Ortega is not the company’s chief executive. As non-executive chair and board representative for Amancio Ortega, she oversees strategic direction, while García Maceiras manages day-to-day operations. This division of responsibilities has been in place since April 2022, reflecting Inditex’s commitment to clear governance and long-term vision.

Values in Action

The 2025 annual report reinforces Ortega’s message. She highlights effort, non-conformity, and courage as core values, and describes Inditex as a young, innovative company eager to take on more ambitious projects. The company’s results back up this philosophy: in 2025, Inditex posted €39.86 billion in sales, up 3.2% from the previous year, and a net profit of €6.22 billion, a 6% increase. The dividend rose to €1.75 per share, and more than 400 store interventions—including openings, expansions, and renovations—were completed.

Inditex’s growth also includes major investments in digital platforms and logistics, such as the new distribution center in Sagunto, set to open in 2026. Yet Ortega’s public statements avoid triumphalism. Instead, she insists on the need to keep improving products, customer experience, technology, and talent development—an approach that echoes her father’s insistence on staying ready for whatever comes next.

Context and Perspective

Inditex’s story is often seen as a model of Spanish business success, but Ortega’s leadership suggests that the company’s future depends as much on mindset as on numbers. By keeping humility and daily effort at the center, she aims to ensure that Inditex remains adaptable in a fast-changing global market. As the company continues to expand and evolve, the lessons passed down from Amancio Ortega remain a steady guide—reminding both leadership and staff that no achievement is ever final.
