The boy disappeared beneath the surface at around 9:15 p.m. Saturday while playing with a friend near the remains of old watermills, close to Las Moreras urban beach in Valladolid. He had come to the riverside with his mother.
Swimming is banned in this stretch of the river for health and safety reasons, but people still visit, especially during summer heat. Jacinto Canales, the Government’s subdelegate in Valladolid, said the initial theory was that the incident happened while the boy was playing. The National Police and Valladolid City Firefighters were mobilized. The Municipal Police also joined the response.
Rescue teams searched the river for more than two hours, using drones for aerial surveillance and drawing on specialists from the Asociación de Salvamento y Rescate de Castilla y León. Divers found the boy’s body near the place where he was last seen. They recovered it around midnight.
The Grupo de Intervención Psicológica en Desastres y Emergencias also supported the boy’s family and close friends. Authorities warned that rivers such as the Pisuerga can be deceptive: the surface may look calm, while underwater currents and hidden obstacles, including rocks and submerged vegetation, pose serious risks.
Swimming in the Pisuerga within Valladolid city limits is officially prohibited, yet Las Moreras remains popular with locals seeking relief from high temperatures. Submerged hazards and unpredictable currents have prompted repeated safety warnings. Municipal data indicate that similar incidents have occurred in previous years, highlighting the risks of unauthorized bathing in urban rivers. Las Moreras park is one of the city’s most frequented green spaces, especially during summer.
