October 2026 is shaping up to be atypical for Spain. Meteorologists expect a spell of unusual warmth in the north, center, and east of the peninsula, as well as the Balearic Islands, while the Mediterranean coast and eastern Andalusia are forecast to get more rain than usual. The month will depart from the usual autumn pattern.
Not every region will feel the change the same way. The peninsula's north and center, its eastern areas, and the Balearic Islands are set for the biggest jump in temperatures. The south and Canary Islands will warm up too, but not as much. Meteorologist Mar Gómez says the signal for higher temperatures is strongest in these areas. Even places with smaller changes will still run warmer than normal. Spain's national meteorological agency, AEMET, puts the chance of above-normal temperatures for October to December 2026 at 70% for most of the country. In the southwest, the probability is about 60%. AEMET's official short-term forecast for late September to mid-October expects temperatures close to normal, with only slightly above-normal values in the northeast, the Mediterranean area, and the Balearic Islands, rather than widespread extreme heat.
Rain is another story. The Mediterranean arc is expected to see the most rain. The forecast points to wetter-than-usual weather in Murcia and Comunidad Valenciana, as well as the Balearic Islands and eastern Andalusia. Some nearby inland areas could get more rain too. The Canary Islands might see a slight increase in rainfall. Monthly forecasts cannot say exactly when or where the rain will fall, or predict whether a single big storm will hit. A wetter month could result from several moderate rain events. AEMET says there's a 50% chance of a wetter-than-normal October to December across much of the north and center, extending into the west. In the northwest, that chance rises to 70%. The outlook for the east and Balearic Islands is less certain.
October is a turning point in Spain's climate calendar. The national average temperature for the month is about 15.9°C, and rainfall averages 78 millimeters. Autumn's arrival is most obvious across the two mesetas and Extremadura, as well as inland Andalusia, where average temperatures drop by around six degrees compared with September. The differences between regions are sharp: Galicia's Atlantic coast is one of the wettest spots, while the eastern Canary Islands often see some of the lowest rainfall in Spain. AEMET notes that the biggest warming is expected in the eastern half and the Mediterranean, as well as the Balearic Islands. The south and Canary Islands will see milder changes. AEMET links the autumn warming trend to an exceptionally hot summer in 2026, which saw a series of heatwaves from June to August and set new temperature records across Spain.
For much of Levante and parts of the interior, October is usually the wettest month, making the forecast for more rain especially impressive. Still, meteorologists warn that these are broad trends. Cold snaps and classic autumn days can still occur, even if the overall pattern is warm and humid.
