Most of mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands are forecast to remain settled on Monday. The Canary Islands face heavy rain and storms, with an orange warning active in the westernmost islands.

AEMET says the heaviest rain is expected over mountainous terrain, where thunderstorms may develop. Locally persistent, very heavy rain remains possible in the westernmost Canary Islands, which are under an orange warning. On Sunday, 1 November, AEMET issued orange warnings for Tenerife and La Palma, covering Tenerife’s metropolitan area and La Palma’s summits and western sector. Forecast rainfall in parts of both islands could exceed 30 litres per square metre in one hour; yellow-warning areas elsewhere in the archipelago faced totals of up to 15 litres per square metre in an hour. Under AEMET’s Meteoalerta system, orange denotes important danger. The agency warned that flooding and rapidly rising water in ravines were possible.

Across most of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, skies are expected to be mostly clear or lightly clouded, with high cloud. Low cloud is forecast along the Cantabrian and Mediterranean coasts. Weak showers are possible on the Levante coast, including an isolated moderate downpour.

Morning mist or fog is likely in Galicia and the Cantabrian region, as well as in Alborán and parts of the eastern third. The forecast comes from Spain’s Agencia Estatal de Meteorología. Showers on 1 November were also forecast to be locally strong; thunderstorms were possible in the western islands and Gran Canaria.

Maximum temperatures are set to fall across the northern half and the eastern third, as well as the Balearic Islands, with the sharpest drop in the far north-east. They will rise on the southern Andalusian coast and remain broadly unchanged elsewhere. Minimum temperatures are expected to decrease generally, though isolated rises are forecast on the far north-eastern coast and in parts of the north-central area. Slight falls are expected in the Canaries. Weak frost is possible in the Pyrenees and locally on the northern plateau and nearby mountains.

Winds will be light from the east inland, with a northerly cierzo in the Ebro valley. Moderate easterlies are expected in the Cantabrian region and may become strong at times in Galicia. Alborán will have moderate winds, with strong intervals in the Strait. Easterly and north-easterly winds are forecast in the Mediterranean, with potentially strong tramontana in Ampurdán and Menorca. The Canaries will have moderate easterly winds. On Tenerife, the island council activated its Plan de Emergencias Insular (PEIN) in alert status for the metropolitan area from 10:00 on 1 November.

Separately, Spain’s political news has included a coalition leadership debate.
