The Balearic taxi association, led by Biel Moragues, maintains that the driver travelled to Ibiza for the day with his daughters, which it says is entirely legal. Transport inspectors identified the taxi again near the airport on the night of the incident. The driver initially intended to return to Palma that evening, but missed the 20:00 ferry and did not leave until the following day.
