RACE estimates repairs for a segment C compact at about €1,000 to €14,000. Its figures assume labour at €65 an hour and show how sharply gearbox faults can lead up the bill.

An automatic gearbox tops the RACE estimate, with a potential bill of €11,000 to €14,000 and about 11 hours of labour. A manual transmission repair is estimated at €7,000 to €10,000 and takes around nine hours; the cost also varies with the vehicle’s age.

The estimates cover a compact car in the segment C class and assume labour at €65 an hour. RACE’s figures are indicative, not a quote for a specific vehicle. The actual bill depends on the car and where the repair is done. These costs come against a backdrop of an aging Spanish fleet: AECA-ITV data reported by Car and Driver España put the average vehicle age at 15.2 years, with more than 60% of Spain’s 31.7 million registered vehicles over 10 years old.

The next most expensive fault is the engine block, estimated at about €5,300. Replacing it can take between 16 and 20 hours. A cylinder-head repair costs around €5,000 and involves roughly 16 hours of work. Following maintenance intervals and keeping oil and coolant levels correct can help prevent damage. Spanish workshop price estimates reported by Motor16 put an oil and filter change at €70 to €120 and a timing belt with water pump at €350 to €500; a broken timing belt can lead to repairs exceeding €1,500.

A Ferrari 456 restoration report offers another example of costly car work, describing unfinished engine work alongside major chassis repairs.

Below that threshold, injector replacement is estimated at about €3,900, including diagnosis, and takes around three and a half hours. The component is expensive, even though the job takes less time than several other repairs on the list.

A crankshaft repair comes to roughly €3,300 and may require about 17 hours. Turbo repairs are estimated at €2,800, with around 11 hours of labour. Replacing all four connecting rods in a four-cylinder engine can reach €2,700 and take up to 20 hours.

The particulate filter is estimated at around €2,500 and takes about two hours to replace. It traps particles produced during combustion. Information from the source, the problem is more common when a car is driven only in town. Emissions-system faults recur in older cars: AECA-ITV figures reported by Car and Driver España put emissions-related defects at 22.3% of faults in vehicles aged 15 years or more. Catalytic converters and particulate filters can deteriorate and contribute to excessive emissions; EGR valves can also cause problems.

At the lower end of the list, replacing an air-conditioning evaporator costs about €1,000 and takes around two hours. A failed compressor can push the bill to roughly €1,500, with about three hours of work.
