A man with a dozen prior police records has been arrested in Tarragona after a series of alleged thefts targeting local businesses. The Mossos d’Esquadra say the 39-year-old is suspected of taking tip-jar cash and other valuables from businesses in Tarragona and Cambrils between July 7 and August 11. One incident was classified as robbery with violence and intimidation; the others were described as thefts carried out while staff were distracted. Police records are not the same as criminal convictions.
The reported incidents began on July 7 at a business on Calle Mallorca in Tarragona, where cash, a handbag, a wallet and other personal items were taken. On July 29, a suspect allegedly entered a venue on Calle Mossèn Salvador Ritort i Faus and took the contents of a tip jar while staff were distracted.
On August 4, the owner of a shop on Calle Falset confronted the suspect as he allegedly tried to leave with a charity collection container. The owner recovered the container, but the suspect escaped with the owner’s mobile phone. The Mossos classified the alleged conduct as robbery with violence and intimidation, a distinct offence from theft under Spanish criminal law.
Further incidents were reported on August 8 at a business on Calle Lleida in Tarragona, where cash and a waist bag containing credit cards, personal documents and house keys were taken. On August 11 at 13:30, a business on Paseo de San Juan Bautista de la Salle in Cambrils reported that a tip jar had been taken while employees were distracted.
Security-camera footage from most of the affected establishments helped police identify the suspect. He was arrested on August 15 and brought before the duty court in Tarragona. An arrest and court appearance do not amount to a finding of guilt; the allegations remain subject to the judicial process. His arrest highlights the exposure of businesses to thefts during routine, busy periods.
