Sagunto residents and municipal representatives observed a minute of silence after the suspected gender-based killing of a 38-year-old woman in Barcelona. Official figures record 44 women killed in 2026 so far.

The woman was 38. Sagunto’s Equality Department called for a minute of silence at noon on Monday 2 November after her suspected gender-based killing in Barcelona. Municipal representatives and council staff joined local residents outside public buildings, alongside local associations.

Spain’s Ministry of Equality said the woman was allegedly killed on 28 October and formally classified the case as a presumed feminicide linked to gender violence. Its announcement on 30 October said she had one son and two minor daughters, and that no previous gender-violence complaints against the alleged perpetrator had been recorded. The ministry’s classification is an administrative designation, not a judicial finding.

The municipality’s Equality Department said official figures recorded 47 women killed in 2025 and 44 so far in 2026. The Ministry of Equality’s count covers women killed by a partner or former partner and stood at 1,385 since records began in 2003. It also reported 35 minors orphaned by gender violence in 2026 and 545 since 2013. The municipality’s figures also count 68 minors as victims since 2013 and three murders linked to vicarious violence in 2026. Separately, Spain’s Units for Violence Against Women prepared 75,876 monitoring files during 2025, according to a 27 October Council of Ministers reference.

A separate report covered an unrelated Barcelona court case involving an 18-year-old, available in earlier coverage.

The department says anyone who suspects a case of violence should call 016 or the emergency number 112. The Ministry of Equality says the national 016 service provides legal advice every day from 8am to 10pm, operates in 53 languages and offers adaptations for people with disabilities. The municipal Women’s Assistance Service operates in person from Monday to Friday, from 8am to 3pm, and can be reached on 96 265 58 89 or WhatsApp on 607 248 363. Requests can also be sent to dona@aytosagunto.es. Appointments are recommended, although the service accepts people without one when circumstances require it.

For an emergency, women can contact the Emergency Coordination Centre on 112. Anyone who has suffered an assault and needs protection can call the National Police on 091 or 96 267 00 91; the Local Police on 092 or 96 265 54 84; or the Guardia Civil on 062. Urgent support is also available through the Generalitat Valenciana’s Centre Dona 24 Hores on 900 580 888 or 016. The Ministry of Equality also lists the AlertCops app for people unable to make a voice call; it can send an alert to police with the user’s geolocation. Calls to 016 do not appear on the phone bill, but the call must be deleted from the device’s call history.
