The Spanish authorities have decided to completely isolate all areas of the Granadilla port in Tenerife, where the Antarctic cruise ship MV Hondius, which has reported a hantavirus outbreak on board, is expected to arrive in the coming hours. There are 153 people on the vessel, with eight confirmed infections and three deaths. According to the ministries of the interior and health, all passengers are currently asymptomatic, but maximum safety measures will be enforced.
Access to the pier is completely restricted, and all navigation within one nautical mile of the MV Hondius is prohibited. Passenger disembarkation will be organized by nationality: Spanish citizens will disembark first and be immediately sent into mandatory quarantine. Separate procedures and special flights are arranged to return other passengers to their home countries. The decision for strict isolation was made to eliminate even the slightest risk of the infection spreading among the local population.
The disembarkation operation and passenger monitoring are personally overseen by the Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who arrived on the island to observe the actions of the Spanish authorities. He emphasized that the risk to the residents of the Canary Islands remains low; however, all sanitary protocols will be observed without exception. In Italy, four people who traveled on the same flight as the woman who died after leaving the MV Hondius remain under observation. In Spain, another woman has been hospitalized in Alicante with suspected hantavirus. Her condition is assessed as mild, and test results are pending.
Spain’s judicial authorities have already confirmed the legality of imposing quarantine for Spanish citizens arriving from the vessel. The authorities stress that all measures are coordinated between ministries and local bodies, and sanitary control will be ensured at every stage. Special charter flights have been arranged for the repatriation of foreign passengers to minimize contact and speed up their return home.
