Tesla Model 3 has overtaken all competitors to become Spain’s best-selling car in September. With 2,519 registrations and a 46.5 percent jump, it is on track to make history as the first electric to lead the overall market.
September brought a jolt to Spain’s car market. Tesla Model 3 shot to the front, logging 2,519 registrations. No other car—gas, diesel, or hybrid—came close. The Model 3 now stands 731 units ahead of the Toyota Corolla. The Toyota C-HR, Dacia Sandero, and Seat Ibiza trail even further. If these numbers hold, the Model 3 will be the first electric car ever to lead Spain’s monthly sales chart. Not even the strongest diesel or hybrid models managed that before.
This wasn’t a slow climb. Tesla’s numbers in Spain swung hard this quarter. In July, registrations crashed by 81.3 percent. August was almost as bad, down 78.8 percent. The reason wasn’t weak demand. It was shipping. No ships from China meant no Model 3 deliveries. Then September flipped everything. Ships from Shanghai arrived just before the quarter closed. Suddenly, Tesla went from a summer slump to a September record. That changed the game.
According to several Spanish media outlets citing Ideauto data, this could be the first time in history that a fully electric vehicle leads the monthly overall new car sales ranking in Spain.
Shipping schedules explain the wild swings. Every Model 3 sold in Spain comes from Shanghai. Deliveries depend on when ships dock. Most cars arrive at the end of each quarter. That creates sharp peaks and deep drops in monthly sales. The Model Y, built in Berlin, follows a different pattern. This quarter, Tesla’s total registrations hit 3,701 by September 27. Only Toyota sold more, with 7,527 units. Volkswagen, Renault, and Seat fell behind.
For the third year running, the Model 3 is Spain’s top electric car. Over 8,400 units sold from January to September 2026. That’s up 14 percent from the same stretch in 2025. The Model 3 now leads the Model Y by more than 3,500 units. But the fight for second among electrics is heating up. The BYD Dolphin Surf is closing in. BYD already beat Tesla in electric registrations in August. If you count plug-in hybrids, BYD edges ahead in total electrified sales.
Price matters. The Model 3 starts at 33,365 euros, including discounts and incentives. Buyers can pick rear- or all-wheel drive. The car’s certified range tops out at 750 kilometers. For shoppers looking at electric cars around 33,000 euros, that’s a strong offer. Strong sales also boost the used market. Tesla’s fast-charging network helps too. But don’t mistake September’s spike for a sudden demand boom. It’s all about shipping. July and August proved that. Anyone eyeing a Model 3 should watch delivery dates. Everything depends on the next ship.
Spanish publications noted that the Model 3’s base price of 33,365 euros was further boosted by promotional campaigns and the government’s Auto+ plan for electric vehicles, contributing to the September sales spike.
The Model 3’s rise isn’t just a fluke. It shows how logistics can put electric cars on top—when supply lines work. But the real demand story is more complicated. As reported earlier, Spain’s car market can shift fast when new players or tech break through. The Model 3’s September lead is a milestone. But can Tesla keep up steady supply? Can BYD turn its momentum into lasting gains? For now, Tesla’s win is all about timing. In Spain, that’s what counts.
