La Palma and La Gomera are under orange rain warnings, and El Hierro has the same alert; Tenerife is on yellow. Rainfall could reach 30 litres per square metre in an hour and 100 in 12 hours.

Residents in the western Canary Islands are being urged to keep vehicles out of ravine channels, even when skies are clear. La Palma and La Gomera are under orange rain warnings, and El Hierro has the same alert; Tenerife is on yellow. The Canary Islands government announced the regional rain alert on 21 October, effective from midnight on 22 October, under its emergency plan for adverse weather, PEFMA. The decision followed forecasts from Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) and other information.

Rainfall could reach 30 litres per square metre in one hour and total 100 litres in 12 hours on the three islands. Aemet set an orange warning for eastern La Palma from midnight until 17:59 on 22 October, with a 40 to 70% probability of those rainfall totals. The rest of La Palma was under a yellow warning, with up to 15 litres per square metre forecast in one hour. Aemet says a dana, a high-altitude isolated depression, will bring unstable conditions to the Canaries, with locally heavy showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall may be unevenly distributed. The western islands are expected to see variable cloud, while the eastern islands are expected to have mainly cloudy skies.

The regional Directorate General for Emergencies advises residents to inspect roofs and terraces. They should check water tanks and clear drains, especially downpipes. The agency also recommends keeping a torch or candles available, along with a camping gas stove in case electricity fails. Store drinking water and medicines; keep a battery-powered radio to hand.

Secure windows and doors against incoming water. Avoid excursions or camping, and travel only when necessary. Anyone who needs to drive should stay away from areas that could flood. A separate ES-Alert test in Tenerife was announced for Thursday as part of the VOLCANEX Tenerife 2026 exercise. The exercise uses a volcanic-eruption scenario and will test emergency alerts on mobile phones. It is separate from the rain alert. The test was announced in an earlier alert notice.

Across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands, high pressure is expected to keep conditions mostly settled. A front will bring cloud and rain eastward through Galicia and the Cantabrian region, then across the Pyrenees. Other parts of the northern half of the peninsula and the north of the Balearic Islands will have variable cloud. Occasional showers are possible in northeastern Catalonia early and late in the day, and cannot be ruled out in the north of the archipelago. Most other areas should be clear or mostly clear. Snow is possible in northern mountain areas above 1,600 to 1,800 metres.

Asturias and La Coruña have yellow warnings for waves. Lugo is also at risk from waves and wind. Scattered morning fog is expected in northern mountain areas, while light high-altitude haze will reach the Canaries.

Maximum temperatures are forecast to rise in Huelva and Ampurdán, but fall in northern mountain areas and the eastern Canary Islands. Minimum temperatures will rise in those islands and across the north-west of the peninsula; falls are expected across most other parts of mainland Spain. Elsewhere, temperatures should change little. Weak frosts are possible in northern mountains.

Westerly and north-westerly winds will affect mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands. They will be moderate over the Balearics and along coasts, with the north-east of the peninsula also seeing moderate winds; elsewhere, they will be light. Strong intervals and probably very strong gusts are expected on the Cantabrian coast, in Ampurdán and along the lower Ebro. The Canaries will have moderate easterly and north-easterly winds.
