Spain Sees Surge in Demand for Cheap V16 Emergency Beacons Ahead of Mandatory Rollout

Are Drivers Prepared for Spain’s New Road Rules? How to Choose the Right V16 Beacon and Avoid Counterfeits

Starting January 1, 2026, Spain will require the use of V16 emergency beacons. Dozens of budget models are flooding the market, but not all meet the official standards. Here’s how to choose the right device and avoid falling prey to scams.

Drivers in Spain can expect a major new rule soon: starting in early 2026, all cars must be equipped with V16 emergency beacons featuring geolocation. This device will become the only legal way to mark your vehicle if you have to stop on the road due to a breakdown or accident.

There are currently many V16 models available on the market, with most priced around €50. However, experts warn that prices may start to rise as the mandatory implementation date approaches. That’s why many drivers are already trying to buy the required device at a better price.

At the same time, popular online platforms and stores are offering options at much lower prices—some models can be found for as little as €20–30. These include brands like SOOS V16, eBOX V16IoT, and Extrastar MOD-V16. However, not all of these devices meet the standards set by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT).

When buying a cheap beacon, it’s crucial to make sure it has official certification. Only devices with the correct certificate will be considered valid once the new rules take effect. You can check authenticity by looking for a number that starts with “LCOE” or “IDIADA PC.” This number must appear on the device and match the official registry.

Certified models must meet strict requirements: 360-degree visibility from at least one kilometer away, autonomous operation for at least 30 minutes, and a SIM card to transmit location data to the DGT 3.0 system for 12 years. If even one of these features is missing, the device will be unusable after January 1, 2026.

Buyers should be especially cautious: counterfeit and outdated versions that do not comply with the new standards are common on the market. These devices are often sold at suspiciously low prices and lack official certification. Experts recommend carefully checking product specifications and avoiding offers that seem too good to be true.

Demand for certified V16 beacons is expected to rise further in the coming months. Drivers are advised not to wait until the last minute to buy one, in order to avoid shortages and price hikes. Choosing the right device will help you avoid fines and make Spanish roads safer.
