Dutch company TomTom has decided to radically change its approach to navigation services in a bid to strengthen its position in the market and provide real competition to giants like Google Maps and Waze. Users can now take advantage of two updated apps: TomTom and Go Expert. Both products have been renamed, offer expanded functionality, and feature a significantly increased number of free optionsβan especially relevant move for drivers seeking alternatives to the usual services.
TomTom positions its main app as a universal assistant for everyday travel. The app now includes additional free features, and developers promise to continue listening to user feedback to make the service even more convenient. For professional drivers, there’s a dedicated app called Go Expert, which provides specialized tools for trucks, buses, and commercial vehicles. This solution targets those who spend most of their working hours behind the wheel and need reliable, accurate navigation.
New features
As part of the redesign, TomTom focused on enhancing key features previously available in AmiGO. Users can still count on efficient route planning, timely alerts about road incidents, and intuitive navigation. On top of that, the apps now offer more accurate maps, turn-by-turn guidance, and real-time traffic updates.
The service provides information on speed limits, alerts about roadworks, accidents, and other potential hazards. Electric vehicle owners have access to special tools: the app helps locate the nearest charging station, parking lot, or points of interest along the route. Users can set charging preferences and receive detailed information about available service locations. At present, these features are only available on Android, but the company plans to expand them to other platforms.
Plans for the future
TomTom is actively working on introducing new features to make navigation even more convenient. Upcoming updates will include offline map access (currently only for Android), as well as a lane guidance systemβparticularly important for complex interchanges and navigating unfamiliar cities. Another anticipated innovation is Routebar: a visual dashboard that displays all route information, including traffic, speed cameras, hazardous sections, and estimated arrival time.
There are plans to add a smart assistant capable of finding available parking spaces near your destination. This should significantly simplify life for drivers in major cities, where finding parking often becomes a real challenge.
What has been removed and what will not appear
Despite expanding functionality, some features have been removed from the latest versions of the apps. For example, TomTom discontinued the overlay mode on Android to focus on developing core tools for drivers. The company also does not plan to implement account login and automatic Bluetooth launchβthese features were deemed to have low demand, though they may return in the future if users show interest.
TomTom emphasizes that all changes are aimed at creating a comprehensive and user-friendly set of navigation tools, useful for both everyday drivers and professionals alike.
For professionals
Go Expert is a standalone app designed for truck, bus, and commercial vehicle drivers. It offers features that take into account the specific needs of routes for large vehicles: height, weight, and width restrictions, as well as special recommendations for road selection. The app helps drivers avoid restricted sections and builds optimal routes with all details considered.
The paid version of Go Expert offers an expanded set of tools, including detailed maps, professional alerts, and customized settings for each type of vehicle. This approach allows drivers to save time and avoid unpleasant surprises on the road.
If you werenβt aware, TomTom is one of the worldβs leading companies in digital navigation and cartography. Founded in the Netherlands in 1991, the company has consistently developed technology for motorists, professional drivers, and businesses.
