Cristo González on His Journey from Tenerife to Qatar and Madrid Memories

Cristo González: From Real Madrid to Umm Salal — Unexpected Turns in a Football Career

The footballer shares his impressions of various stages of his career. He recalls important moments in Spain and abroad. He speaks about his family and personal priorities, and reflects on his experiences in Qatar and Portugal.

Cristo González continues to surprise football fans with his unconventional approach to the game and his choice of clubs. The forward, who once shone for Castilla and even scored for the main team of the Madrid club, now represents Umm Salal in Qatar, while keeping his past achievements and new goals in mind.

Cristo’s memories of his first steps in professional football are connected to Tenerife. According to him, his first goal remains the most memorable, as it opened the door to a big career. It was then that he received an unusual nickname from his coach, which helped boost his confidence at the start of his career.

The move to Real Madrid was a logical step in his development. González notes that he had offers from other Spanish clubs as well, but chose the capital team, believing it was the best place for his growth. In training with the first team, he met stars like Benzema and Ramos, and his goal in the Copa del Rey became one of the brightest moments.

Within the team, Cristo felt supported, especially by the Spanish players. However, despite strong performances for Castilla, he was unable to secure a spot in the main squad. In his view, he just needed a bit more luck to get the chance to become the third striker among the starters. Management decisions were not in his favor, and he was forced to look for new opportunities.

González was particularly impressed by his encounters with football legends. Roberto Carlos frequently attended youth team training sessions, and words of support from Ronaldo became a true recognition of Cristo’s talent.

After leaving Madrid, the striker considered several options to continue his career, including offers from Germany. Ultimately, he chose the Italian club Udinese, although he initially hoped to stay in Spain. He couldn’t establish himself in Italy, leading to loan spells with various teams: Huesca, Mirandés, Valladolid, and Sporting. Each stage brought its own lessons, but he has especially fond memories of his time in Gijón.

The move to the Portuguese club Arouca was unexpected, but it was there that Cristo truly felt part of a close-knit team. His son was born in Portugal, and family support has always remained a crucial part of the footballer’s life.

Music accompanies González everywhere, though he doesn’t pursue it professionally. Among his favorite artists are Anuel and Maikel from the Canary Islands, with whom he has developed a close friendship.

The move to Qatar happened after a deal with Sporting from Lisbon fell through. Al-Sadd showed interest in the player, and after the European transfer window closed, Cristo decided to try himself in a new league. He was surprised by the level of the local championship, which turned out to be higher than expected.

Now, playing for Umm Salal, González notes the family-like atmosphere within the team and the opportunity to enjoy football. His contract with Al-Sadd runs for another two years, and his future will depend on his performance on the field.

Among his personal dreams, Cristo highlights already becoming a father, the desire to play for Sporting Lisbon, and the opportunity to work with Pep Guardiola and play alongside Messi.
