Rosalía Unveils Her Album at a Unique Historic Site in Madrid

The capital’s hidden gem: Where Rosalía unveiled the secrets behind her Lux album

Singer Rosalía chose an extraordinary venue to present her new album—a historic building in Madrid. Discover its secrets and fascinating history. Admission is absolutely free.

To present her new and most ambitious album, Lux, singer Rosalía chose one of Madrid’s most unique locations: the Beti Jai fronton—a true 19th-century architectural gem now open to the public free of charge. After decades of neglect and abandonment, the Madrid city council took the fate of the building into its hands in 2015, launching a large-scale restoration. The project received high praise, underscored by the 2025 National Award for Restoration and Preservation of Cultural Heritage.

It was in this historic setting that the singer gave an open interview to Zane Lowe, creative director of Apple Music. In a one-hour conversation, Rosalía revealed details of the album’s creation, a process that spanned three years. The album became a true creative experiment: it features 14 languages, from Latin to Japanese, and pays homage to iconic female figures in history and spirituality, such as Joan of Arc and Saint Teresa of Jesus. No loops were used in the recording—every sound was performed live, with symphonic and choral arrangements provided by the London Symphony Orchestra. The choice of Beti Jai as the venue for such a revelation proved symbolic, bridging the reborn architecture with Rosalía’s own spiritual journey.

Built in 1894 to host Basque pelota matches, the frontón Beti Jai is one of those places that seem almost unbelievable to find in the very heart of Madrid. Its unique architecture, blending Neo-Mudejar style, wrought iron, and 19th-century classicism, was designed by architect Joaquín Rucoba, who also created Bilbao’s new city hall and the Arriaga Theater. He dreamed of constructing a true ‘cathedral of sport.’ Throughout the 20th century, this venue underwent various transformations: it served as a workshop, police station, warehouse, a site for political gatherings, and even a film set.

It was only after becoming municipal property in 2015 that its final revival began. Today, Beti Jai, now listed as a Property of Cultural Interest, is far more than a restored building. It stands as a vivid symbol of Madrid’s ability to reinvent itself while honoring its heritage. Rosalía captured this idea perfectly by choosing these surroundings to present an album that challenges genres, structures, and conventions. “I wanted to carry each song through to the end, rather than breaking it, as I used to,” she admitted in an interview—recorded in English, yet brimming with deep sensitivity.

After the interview was published, interest in this corner of the Chamberí district has grown significantly. It’s no surprise: you can visit Beti Jai Fronton completely free of charge. The site offers both self-guided tours and organized excursions, children’s workshops, and Basque pelota exhibitions. From October to June, the complex is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 14:00, and until 18:00 during the summer months. It’s closed only three days a year: October 23, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Those wishing to delve deeper into its history can register for events on the official website. The exact address is 7 Marqués de Riscal Street. Nearby metro stations are Alonso Martínez (lines L4, L5, and L10) and Rubén Darío (L5).

Earlier, we reported on another unique site in Spain. In Galicia, you’ll find an ancient Celtic portal, which is already three thousand years old. This megalithic complex is linked to mysterious ancient rituals.
