Carlos Sainz Points Out Drawbacks of Cooling Suit and the Popularity of Ice Baths

Carlos Sainz and Williams: Why Ice Baths Have Become a Trend in Formula 1

Carlos Sainz shares his thoughts on the new cooling suit, also commenting on the use of ice baths. The athlete emphasizes that the system needs improvement. The topic relates to race preparation.

Carlos Sainz’s strong performance in Baku delivered Williams’ first podium of the season and boosted the driver’s confidence. However, Sainz emphasizes that the Singapore circuit is not considered optimal for the FW47, and the upcoming practice sessions should provide answers to many questions.

Sainz said that in Saudi Arabia he tested a new cooling suit developed by the FIA. According to him, the device doesn’t provide the necessary effect throughout the entire race distance, so he prefers to use it closer to the end of the session. Despite certain inconveniences and technical flaws, the suit does help reduce physical strain.

Discussing prospects in Singapore, Sainz noted that the Williams car performs best on low-downforce tracks. Every time the team uses a larger rear wing, speed drops. Nevertheless, the driver is determined to fight for top positions, as in Baku, and aims to maintain his motivation through the end of the season.

Sainz admitted that this year turned out to be one of the toughest in his career. After the summer break, he came back with a new approach and renewed energy, which led to good results in Baku and Monza. However, a series of setbacks again affected his psychological state. Despite this, Sainz managed to stay focused and make progress.

Sainz paid special attention to the climate conditions in Singapore. According to him, the high humidity combined with temperatures around 29 degrees adds extra strain on the body. Unlike other races where heat is not accompanied by humidity, here athletes face more serious challenges.

Sainz noted that the cooling suit has gradually improved. While previously it lasted only half an hour, the system can now operate for about an hour. The driver mentioned that even if failures occur, he is prepared to finish the race without additional support, but when the suit works properly, physical fatigue is noticeably reduced.

Sainz also highlighted the popularity of ice baths among drivers. He said this recovery method has become standard in the paddock over the past 8–10 years. Previously, not all athletes used this technique, but now almost everyone relies on it to reduce stress and fatigue.

Sainz chose not to reveal certain aspects of his preparation, noting that each driver has their own secrets. He added that despite some inconvenience caused by the suit’s design, during the race his attention is fully focused on driving, making any discomfort virtually unnoticeable.

The Spanish driver expressed confidence that engineers would continue to work on improving the cooling system, and that it would become more efficient in the future. Overall, Sainz gave a positive assessment of the introduction of new technologies, emphasizing their importance for enhancing comfort and safety on the track.
