Northwest Spain continues to strengthen its reputation as a magnet for those seeking not just a vacation, but a genuine connection with nature. In the heart of Galicia, within the renowned Ribeira Sacra region, a new hiking trail has emerged that promises to be more than just a simple walk. This is a thoughtfully designed journey, crafted to engage all the senses and leave a profound, unforgettable impression from experiencing this ancient and picturesque land.
The new trail has been given the poetic name “A Embelesadora” — which can be translated as “The Enchantress” or “The Seductress.” And it truly lives up to its name. The route forms a loop just over ten kilometers long, winding through the municipality of Taboada. The path starts at the old chapel of Iglesia de Villela and leads hikers through the charming villages of Sobresedo and Campo. The trail is of moderate difficulty and is designed for about three hours of leisurely walking with a gentle elevation gain, making it accessible to most outdoor enthusiasts. It twists through dense oak groves, chestnut forests, and past centuries-old vineyards that descend in terraces down to the waters of the Belesar reservoir.
The main feature of “Charovnitsa” is its concept of sensory immersion. The creators invite visitors not just to look around, but to listen, breathe in, touch, and even taste this region. Every step here is a new discovery. You can hear birdsong blending with the rustle of leaves and the gentle lapping of water. Breathe in the damp scent of earth after the morning fog, the fragrances of wildflowers, and the aroma of sun-warmed tree bark. Touch the cool stones of ancient churches or the rough bark of centuries-old oaks. The visual aspect is striking: emerald hills mirrored in the calm surface of the Miño River and panoramic views from specially equipped observation decks. This is a place where time slows down, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the moment.
In addition to its natural beauty, the route is rich in cultural and historical artifacts. One of its main highlights is Castro-Candas, an ancient settlement that emerges from beneath the water only when the level of the Belesar reservoir drops significantly. This mystical spectacle recalls the region’s rich Celtic past. The trail also introduces visitors to the unique winemaking culture of Ribeira Sacra, often referred to as ‘heroic’ because of the incredibly steep slopes where the vineyards are cultivated. Passing by small family wineries, you can sense the spirit of traditions handed down through generations. The entire route infrastructure, including clear signage, is meticulously planned so that travelers can focus on enjoying their walk.
Thanks to abundant shade from the surrounding forests and the coolness from the water, ‘A Embelesadora’ is ideal for visiting in the summer, although it retains its charm even during the off-season. After finishing the hike, the town of Taboada offers everything needed for a comfortable rest: from cozy rural hotels to restaurants where you can recharge by sampling traditional Galician cuisine. The emergence of this route further confirms Ribeira Sacra’s status as one of Spain’s leading ecotourism and active leisure destinations, attracting those who appreciate authenticity and unspoiled beauty.
