Portugal Invites Tourists to the Grape Harvest: How to Become an Enologist for a Day in Three Renowned Wine Regions

De la cosecha a la cata: una experiencia vinícola única en Portugal

From August to October 2025, Portugal offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of winemaking. Visitors can join the harvest in Alentejo, Douro, and Minho regions, learn about the winemaking process, and taste the best local varieties. This is a chance to experience the country’s ancient traditions first-hand.

From late summer to mid-autumn, Portugal’s vineyards are transformed, signaling the start of one of the most important seasons of the year — the harvest. In 2025, this centuries-old tradition becomes available not only to locals but also to travelers. One hotel chain is offering a unique program that lets anyone become a winemaker for a day and immerse themselves in the culture of wine production in three of the country’s iconic regions.

The first stop is Alentejo, a region known for its endless golden plains and hot sun. From August 10 to September 10, guests can enjoy a full cycle of wine experiences at a hotel located near the city of Beja. The program begins with the distribution of a participant kit, including everything needed for working in the field. Visitors then head to the vineyards to harvest grapes, followed by a tour of the winery and cellars where oak barrels are stored. Experts share the secrets of the vinification process, and the day ends with a tasting of local Santa Vitória wines paired with traditional regional appetizers.

Next, the route heads north to the Douro Valley—a region of breathtaking landscapes recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Vineyards here are set on steep, terraced slopes descending to the river. The harvest season in this area will last from August 25 to October 5. Participants will not only gather grapes on these picturesque hillsides, but also follow every stage of the winemaking process under the guidance of experienced enologists. The program also includes a tasting of Val Moreira wines and an introduction to local cuisine.

The third participating region is Minho, the birthplace of the famous ‘Vinho Verde.’ This area is known for its fresh climate and lush greenery. From September 8 to 28, visitors can join the grape harvest, tour a winery, and learn about the production of these light and refreshing wines. The highlight will be a tasting of Paço do Curutelo drinks, paired with dishes typical of northern Portugal. As in the other regions, each participant will receive a commemorative set and a bottle of local wine as a gift.

This initiative is more than just a tourist activity—it’s a true cultural and gastronomic journey. It allows visitors to Portugal to experience the pace of rural life, connect with ancient traditions, and understand that wine is not just a drink but an integral part of the country’s history and landscape, from the sun-drenched south of Alentejo to the green north of Minho.
