Electric and Hybrid Car Sales in Spain Surge by 152% in July 2025

El mercado de vehículos eléctricos en España bate récords: ¿qué hay detrás de este auge?

In July 2025, sales of electrified vehicles in Spain soared by 152.5%, surpassing last year’s figures and setting new records. Electric and hybrid cars now account for nearly one-fifth of the market.

In July 2025, the market for electrified vehicles in Spain continued its rapid growth. The total number of plug-in vehicles sold, including electric cars and plug-in hybrids, reached nearly 23,000, which is 152.5% more compared to the same period last year. This accounts for almost one-fifth of the country’s entire car market.

Since the beginning of the year, more than 134,000 electrified vehicles have been sold in Spain, almost double the figures for 2024. The share of such vehicles in total sales rose to 15.94%, up 6.5 percentage points from a year earlier.

Considering all alternative vehicles — electrified, hybrid, and gas-powered cars — their sales in July increased by 44.1%, reaching over 67,000 units and capturing more than half of the market. Over the first seven months of 2025, nearly half a million such vehicles were sold in Spain, up 46.7% from the previous year.

Pure electric cars (with zero emissions) saw a 117.6% increase in sales in July, surpassing 10,000 units and accounting for 8.42% of the market. Since the start of the year, their sales have grown by 83.8%, reaching over 62,000 vehicles.

Plug-in hybrids (PHEV) grew even faster—by 188.4% in July, with nearly 13,000 units sold, representing 10.86% of the market. Over seven months, their sales doubled, exceeding 71,000.

Sales of conventional hybrid cars without charging capability also increased—by 15.5% in July, with more than 40,000 units sold, making up a third of the market. Over the year, their sales grew by almost a third, exceeding 294,000 units.

Gas-powered cars saw a rise of 49.5% in July, with 4,000 units sold, and accounted for 3.38% of the market. Since the beginning of the year, their sales have grown by 85.3%, reaching nearly 36,000 units.

In the passenger car and SUV segment, total sales of electrified, hybrid, and gas models rose by 43.3% in July, surpassing 64,000 units. They now account for more than 66% of the market, remaining the most popular choice among buyers. Over the seven months of 2025, sales in this segment increased by 46.8%, exceeding 452,000 vehicles.

The growth of the plug-in electric vehicle segment is especially notable—in July, sales grew by 154.8%, surpassing 21,000 units, which represents more than 21% of the market, nearly 12 points higher than in July 2024. Pure electric vehicles grew by 127.1%, and plug-in hybrids by 178.8%.

Overall, in the first seven months of 2025, more than 123,000 electrified passenger cars were sold in Spain, nearly double last year’s figure and accounting for 17.41% of the total market.

Experts note that the current growth rate signals a significant shift toward environmentally friendly transport. Spain has already surpassed the total sales of electrified vehicles recorded in 2024, and now it is important to maintain this trend to catch up with the European average and strengthen its market position.
