In the evening, a popular Spanish TV channel once again hosted a debate on social inequality between generations. In recent decades, the wealth gap between elderly and young residents in the country has widened almost ninefold. This trend is causing concern among both experts and the general public.
During the discussion, business representatives, including the head of the employers’ association, cited well-known athletes as examples to highlight the importance of individual effort in achieving success. In their view, young Spaniards lack the perseverance and work ethic needed to reach the standard of living they desire. However, this position generated a mixed reaction among the program’s participants.
Some participants in the debate pointed out that some entrepreneurs consider the tax burden excessive and pension payments too high. Meanwhile, young workers face low wages and limited career opportunities. This fuels tension between age groups.
Trade union activist Afra Blanco (Afra Blanco) criticized such perspectives. She suggested a different view, noting that responsibility for low youth incomes lies not with pensioners but with employers. In her opinion, working conditions and pay levels are set by company management, not by the older generation.
Blanco also recalled that current pensioners receive their payments thanks to many years of work and contributions to the country’s economy. She emphasized that if pensions are not adjusted for inflation, this will negatively affect the earnings of young professionals as well. As an example, she cited a situation nearly a decade ago when the government did not raise pensions, which coincided with a slowdown in wage growth.
Concluding the discussion, the union representative noted that to improve the situation for young people, it is necessary to unite and seek changes in working conditions. Some program participants considered her position too harsh towards entrepreneurs, but the topic of social justice and balancing the interests of different generations remains one of the most debated issues in Spanish society.
