Kia has begun production of its first electric vehicle for the European market — the EV4 model. The new crossover is being assembled at the Kia AutoLand Slovakia plant in Žilina, where extensive upgrades to the production lines have been carried out. A total of 108 million euros was allocated for these improvements, allowing the facility to be prepared for manufacturing state-of-the-art electric models.
The EV4 is the first fully electric Kia vehicle to be produced directly in Europe. This decision is driven by growing demand for electric cars among European consumers and Kia’s goal to strengthen its position in the eco-friendly transport market. Since August 20, 2025, the plant in Slovakia has been manufacturing electric vehicles alongside hybrid and petrol models, expanding its range for a variety of customers.
The new model is built on the E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) developed by Hyundai. Buyers will have two battery options: a standard 58.3 kWh capacity and an extended 81.4 kWh version. Key technological features of the EV4 include bidirectional charging, enabling the car to serve as a power source for external devices.
The exterior of the EV4 reflects Kia’s latest design approach: bold body lines are combined with a dynamic silhouette. An aluminum hood is used to reduce weight and enhance stability. The model will be available in eight colors, including an exclusive matte finish.
The plant in Žilina, which opened in 2004, covers an area of about two square kilometers and is equipped with more than 600 robots. The facility employs 3,700 people, and its production capacity allows for up to 350,000 vehicles and 540,000 engines to be assembled annually. In addition to the EV4, models such as the XCeed and Sportage are produced here, including their hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. In 2024, hybrid vehicles accounted for a quarter of the plant’s total output.
Since its opening, the facility has produced more than five million vehicles, which are exported to 83 countries worldwide. This represents approximately 11% of Kia’s total global output.
The plant places particular emphasis on sustainability. Over the past ten years, it has achieved an 11% reduction in electricity consumption per vehicle, a 28% cut in water usage, and a 13% decrease in CO2 emissions. The facility now runs entirely on renewable energy, and by the end of the year, a solar power station on site will meet 1.5% of its total energy needs.
The launch of EV4 production in Europe highlights Kia’s strategy for advancing electric mobility and adapting to the European market’s demands. The new electric crossover is expected to attract buyers interested in modern and environmentally friendly transport solutions.
