Land Rover prepares the smallest Defender yet—electric SUV to surprise

Land Rover готовит сенсационный компактный электрический внедорожник с полного привода — это новинка, о которой говорят все, ведь такого поворота от легендарного бренда мало кто ожидал

Land Rover is revamping its iconic Defender lineup with a compact electric version built on a new platform. The model aims to retain its characteristic spirit but will surprise with its size and unique engineering solutions

Land Rover has decided to radically update its most recognizable model. In the coming years, the company plans to launch an all-new Defender, which will become the most compact and technologically advanced in the brand’s history. This move could reshape the SUV market, as we are talking about the first fully electric Baby Defender, which, despite its modest dimensions, will retain the key qualities of the original.

The British manufacturer’s plans have already sparked lively debate among brand enthusiasts. The new Defender Sport, as it is called within the company, is expected to debut in 2027 and become not only the smallest, but also the most eco-friendly member of the family. According to russpain, development is underway on the EMA platform, which is already used for other Jaguar Land Rover models. This solution enabled engineers to place the batteries under the floor, improving stability and weight distribution, though it also limited suspension capabilities compared to the classic Defender.

Compactness and technology

The main feature of the upcoming model is its length—just over 4.5 meters. That is shorter than the current Defender 90, making the vehicle particularly appealing for urban settings and narrow roads. However, the developers do not intend to sacrifice off-road capabilities for compactness. The Baby Defender is expected to have all-wheel drive and two electric motors, ensuring confident performance off-road. At the same time, the vehicle’s weight will be noticeably lower than its larger counterparts, which should have a positive effect on dynamics and energy consumption.

Land Rover emphasizes that the new Defender Sport will retain its signature character: a robust body, minimalist design, and the ability to tackle challenging routes. However, it should be noted that its off-road capability will not match that of the classic versions. This is due to the new platform’s features and suspension travel limitations. Nevertheless, engineers assure that these capabilities will be sufficient for most owners, especially considering that the main target audience is city and suburban residents, for whom versatility and eco-friendliness are key.

A New Philosophy for Defender

The switch to electric drive is more than just a technical upgrade—it’s part of JLR’s broader strategy to reinvent the Defender brand. Now, each model is expected to have a distinct look and a clearly defined character, as already seen in the Range Rover and Discovery lineups. Company executives note that, in recent years, engineers and designers have developed a unique style that sets Defender apart from other SUVs. The Baby Defender will be the first step in implementing this vision, opening a new chapter in the brand’s history.

The company believes that the compact electric Defender will attract a new audience who previously overlooked the brand due to the size or features of classic models. At the same time, the core values—strength, reliability, and the ability to handle any challenge—will remain. This approach may serve as an example for other manufacturers seeking a balance between tradition and modern market demands.

Challenges and Expectations

Despite the optimism of the management, the Baby Defender project comes with certain risks. Downsizing and transitioning to an electric platform require new engineering solutions as well as significant investments. Moreover, not all Defender fans are ready to accept these changes, since for many, the classic design and maximum off-road capability are especially important. However, the market sets its own rules: stricter environmental regulations and increasing demand for compact vehicles are forcing brands to seek compromises.

Land Rover expects the new Defender Sport to be not just a technological breakthrough, but also a commercial success. If the project meets expectations, the company will be able to strengthen its market position and attract younger buyers who value innovation and environmental consciousness. In any case, the launch of the Baby Defender will be one of the most significant events in the automotive industry in the coming years.

Land Rover is a British premium car manufacturer known for its SUVs and distinctive style. The Defender is one of the brand’s most recognizable models, with a history spanning decades. Over the years, the vehicle has become a symbol of reliability and durability, beloved by travelers and professionals worldwide. In recent years, the company has actively introduced new technologies and strives to meet modern standards while preserving the brand’s traditional values.
