Spain is much more than just sun-drenched beaches and cities rich in history. The country holds true treasures for nature lovers, especially in its northern regions. Cantabria, with its unique combination of seaside coast and majestic mountains, is the perfect destination for travel—especially in autumn, when the local landscapes turn unbelievably vibrant colors.
For those seeking solitude and breathtaking views, the very heart of mountainous Cantabria, within the municipality of Soba, is home to the Collados del Asón Natural Park. Here, you can completely escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and immerse yourself in the wild, experiencing its untouched beauty and tranquility.
The park’s unique landscape is the result of centuries-old glaciers that dominated this area at the beginning of the Quaternary period, more than two million years ago. Their slow yet powerful movement shaped the limestone massifs, whose peaks today rise more than 1,580 meters above sea level. It was precisely glacial erosion and the ensuing karst processes that created such striking geological formations as the Ondojón glacial cirque—one of the park’s main jewels. This entire mountainous complex is part of the massive glacial system of eastern Cantabria.
This area was designated a nature reserve in 1999, which helped preserve its unique ecosystems. To fully appreciate the scale and beauty of these mountains, take the road from La Gándara to Arredondo. From here, numerous hiking trails begin, ideal for trekking enthusiasts. One of the most popular routes follows the Bustalveinte glacier, offering travelers breathtaking panoramic views.
A walk through the park immerses you in dense beech and birch forests, which in autumn become a vibrant display of color. Completing the scene is the Asón River, which has its source here. Its origin is an impressive waterfall, where water plunges from a height of over 50 meters, creating a deafening roar and a mesmerizing spectacle. This is a place of power and natural harmony that leaves no one indifferent. Visiting Collados del Asón Park is a chance to connect with the ancient history of the Earth, enjoy the tranquility, and breathe the purest mountain air.
