How Clubs Are Grouped in the 2025 Spanish Cup

Copa del Rey kicks off: who’s playing whom—and why Real Madrid and Barcelona are sitting out

A new season of the Copa del Rey kicks off in Spain. Clubs from various leagues take part in the first stage. Some teams skip the opening round. The group allocations have already been determined.

Spain is set to launch the next, 122nd edition of its national cup tournament. Today, the Luis Aragonés Football Center in Las Rozas will host the first round draw. This year, the four teams participating in the Supercopa — Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid, and Athletic from Bilbao — will not compete at this stage.

The remaining participants are divided into four groups. The first group includes teams from Galicia, Asturias, Castile and León, and Cantabria. Clubs like Celta, Real Sociedad, Alavés, Oviedo, as well as Segunda teams such as Valladolid, Mirandés, Racing Santander, Eibar, Sporting Gijón, Burgos, Deportivo, and Cultural Leonesa will compete here. They are joined by lower-division teams, including Racing Ferrol, Ponferradina, Pontevedra, Real Avilés, Arenas Club, as well as winners from regional and preliminary stages.

The second group brings together clubs from Navarre, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, and Aragon. This group features Osasuna, Mallorca, Espanyol, Girona, as well as Huesca, Zaragoza, and Andorra from the second division. Among the participants are Nàstic, Tarazona, Teruel, Europa, Sabadell, and other teams from the lower leagues. This group also includes winners of the Federation Cup and preliminary round matches.

The third group includes the Valencian Community, Andalusia, Murcia, and part of Castilla-La Mancha. Participating clubs are Villarreal, Betis, Valencia, Sevilla, Levante, Elche, as well as Almería, Granada, Cádiz, Córdoba, Málaga, Castellón, and Ceuta. They are joined by Eldense, Cartagena, Murcia, Antequera, Torremolinos, and others. The group also features winners of the regional and preliminary stages.

The fourth group includes clubs from Madrid, the Canary Islands, Castilla-La Mancha, and Extremadura. Rayo Vallecano, Getafe, Leganés, Las Palmas, Albacete, as well as Tenerife, Mérida, Guadalajara, Cacereño, Talavera, and Ibiza are among the participants. Also joining are Rayo Majadahonda, Navalcarnero, Alcalá, Extremadura, Quintanar del Rey, along with winners of the preliminary matches.

Thus, the draw has determined the group line-ups for the tournament’s first stage. Soon, the matchups that will open the competition for the trophy will be announced. The main favorites will join the tournament at later stages.
