Dean Huijsen will not be able to participate in the upcoming fixtures of the Spanish national football team. The defender was forced to leave the team’s training camp after being diagnosed with a calf muscle injury. Doctors estimate his recovery will take 12 to 15 days.
The player arrived at the training camp in Las Rozas on Monday evening, already experiencing muscle discomfort. The national team’s medical staff and representatives of the Madrid club maintained constant communication to monitor his condition. The following day, Huijsen did not take part in training, and the club was informed about the negative progression.
On Wednesday, the footballer underwent additional medical tests, which confirmed the injury. As a result, it was decided to release him from the squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Bulgaria, scheduled to take place in Elche and Valladolid respectively.
Aymeric Laporte, who plays for «Athletic», has been called up to the national team in place of Huijsen. For Laporte, this marks a return after a long absence — he has not played for the national team since November last year. The coaching staff initially considered him one of the leading candidates for the central defense position.
The medical staff of the Madrid club clarified that Hojsen has been diagnosed with a muscle injury in his left calf. The player is expected to return to training and be ready to participate in the match against Barcelona, scheduled for October 26.
The Spanish Football Federation has officially confirmed that the defender will be unable to assist the national team in the upcoming matches. The statement noted that the player arrived with signs of muscle fatigue, did not train on Tuesday, and, after examination, was released from further participation in the camp. The club was wished a speedy recovery for the athlete.
Doctors from the Madrid club continue to monitor Hojsen’s condition and will adjust the rehabilitation process according to his recovery dynamics. It is expected that after the international break, the defender will be able to rejoin full team training.
