Miguel Herrán to Play Legendary Boxer Poli Díaz in New Netflix Film

Netflix gears up for a knockout: 'Money Heist' star to portray Spain's controversial idol

A new biopic is in the works to chronicle the rise and fall of the famed athlete. The leading role will be played by a well-known actor. Viewers can expect a deeply moving drama.

Streaming giant Netflix has announced the start of production on an ambitious project that promises to be one of the year’s most high-profile film events in Spain. At the heart of the story is the biography of Policarpo “Poli” Díaz, the iconic boxer known as the “Colt from Vallecas.” The complex and controversial role will be taken on by Miguel Herrán, the actor who gained international fame for his roles in “Élite” and “La Casa de Papel.” For Herrán, this project represents a true challenge, demanding not only an impressive physical transformation, but also a deep psychological immersion into the character.

The film transports viewers to Spain in the 1980s, a time of great change and hope. It was during this era that Poli Díaz’s star rose on the sporting horizon. Coming from the impoverished Madrid district of Vallecas, he seemed to embody the Spanish dream. His journey from poverty and family struggles to the world lightweight boxing championship inspired millions. Díaz was more than just an athlete; he became a symbol that a street kid could conquer the world with nothing but talent, perseverance, and an unbreakable will to win.

However, the film will not focus solely on athletic triumphs. The creators aim to show the other side of fame as well. Dizzying success brought Díaz into a world of big money, temptations, and dangerous connections. Lacking the life experience and support needed to cope with his sudden popularity, he was drawn into a whirlwind of destructive habits. The film tells the story of how the boxer’s greatest battle took place not in the ring, but within himself — a struggle with his own demons that threatened to destroy everything he had achieved.

The director’s chair is taken by Daniel Calparsoro, known for his dynamic and hard-hitting cinematic style. He shared his vision for the project, describing it as a fast-paced story about a man who achieved everything, but lacked the emotional and cultural tools to manage his success. According to him, this will be a story about a people’s champion who became a symbol of overcoming adversity, but ultimately found himself face to face with his own fame. The production is handled by Alea Media with the involvement of producer Aitor Gabilondo. Filming has already begun and will take place in key locations for the story, including Madrid and Segovia, adding authenticity to the narrative.
