In the Murcia region, not far from the historic center of Cehegín, lies a unique archaeological complex that has witnessed the rise and fall of several great civilizations. This site, located on a strategically important elevation of the Iberian Peninsula, preserves traces of the Iberians, Romans, and Visigoths. Today, this place, known as the Begastri Archaeological Park (Yacimiento de Begastri), is open to visitors. Admission, which includes a guided tour, costs just two euros, making it one of the region’s most affordable historical sites.
The history of the settlement dates back to the 4th century BC, when it was a thriving Iberian center. Its significance grew further with the arrival of the Romans. In the 1st century AD, Begastri received the status of a municipium—a city with self-governing rights within the Roman Empire. Archaeological evidence points to the existence of a developed urban infrastructure during this period, which, according to researchers, may have included a forum, temples, and public baths typical of Roman cities.
Begastri reached its greatest prosperity during the Visigothic era. The settlement became an important religious center, serving as the bishop’s residence. One of the most valuable discoveries from this period is the famous Cruz Monogramática de Cehegín. This artifact, which was kept in one of the religious buildings, attests to the high status of the city in the Christian world of that time.
For the convenience of visitors, in 2025 the archaeological park will be open on weekends. During the summer months, from July to September, guided tours are held at 9:30, 10:30, and 11:30 a.m. At other times of the year, the schedule changes, but weekend access remains available. Individual tourists do not need to book in advance. For organized groups, it is recommended to reserve a visit by calling 628 40 85 65 or 968 723 550. The ticket price includes an introductory video and a walking tour of the hill, where the remains of ancient walls and buildings have been preserved.
The complex can be reached by car. Take the highway to exit 53 (Cehegín Este), and then follow the signs to the Ronda Este bypass. From there, a short route leads to the “greenway” Vía Verde del Noroeste, which brings you directly to the entrance of the park. Parking is available for visitors. The convenient location allows you to combine a trip to Begastri with a visit to other attractions in Cehegín, such as its Archaeological Museum and the historic quarter, which is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural.
