Andalusia Introduces Tax Deduction for Gym and Sports Club Attendance

Andalusia residents will be able to claim a partial sports refund in 2026 – An unexpected move by authorities

Authorities in Andalusia have announced a new tax benefit for those who are physically active. The measure will cover expenses for gym memberships and club fees. There will be a limit on the amount that can be claimed. The initiative is set to be included in the region’s 2026 budget.

The authorities of Andalusia have decided to encourage residents who lead an active lifestyle. As part of the preparation for the 2026 budget, they announced a special tax deduction for those who spend money on gym memberships and sports organization dues.

The idea is simple: anyone who pays for sports center services can get back 15% of the amount spent, but no more than 100 euros per year. According to the regional government’s estimates, almost 800,000 people will be able to benefit from this measure. The total amount of refunds could reach 36 million euros.

Officials emphasize that the purpose of this initiative is to make sports more accessible to a broader segment of the population and to support those who take care of their health. There are no income restrictions for receiving the deduction, which sets this measure apart from others, such as tax breaks related to veterinary expenses for new pets. In that case, there is an income threshold: 80,000 euros for individual filings and 100,000 euros for joint filings.

It is important to note that the refund applies only to memberships and dues, not to the purchase of sports equipment or gear. The list also includes fees for sports federations and similar organizations.

This measure continues the policy of reducing the tax burden, which the regional authorities have been implementing for several years. Last year, for example, tax benefits were introduced for families paying for additional English and IT classes for their children. Together, these two recent initiatives will allow residents to save nearly 50 million euros.

Authorities in Andalucía note that since the current leadership took office, the total annual tax relief has exceeded one billion euros. The new rules are expected to take effect when filing tax returns for 2026, that is, based on current expenses.

According to government officials, the remaining part of the tax reform package will be announced soon. It is expected to include measures related to housing. In previous years, tax deductions for rent were expanded, and rates for young people buying real estate were reduced.
