Autopsy Confirms: Abderrahim’s Death in Torrejón Was Caused by Suffocation

Madrid investigates death of man following police detention

The forensic examination established that Abderrahim died of asphyxia. The report notes injuries and police actions. One officer remains under investigation.

In Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid), the forensic investigation into the death of Abderrahim El Akhou, who died following his arrest by two police officers, has been completed. The final expert report confirms: death occurred as a result of suffocation caused by violent actions. The document, signed by three specialists from the Madrid Institute of Forensic Medicine, has been added to the case file and has become key evidence in the investigation.

The events took place on the night of June 18, 2025. Two Madrid municipal police officers, returning from dinner, detained a man who, according to them, was attempting a theft. Videos recorded by witnesses captured one officer holding Abderrahim on the ground by wrapping his arm around his neck, while the second officer held his legs. The footage shows the detainee lying face down with his movements restricted.

Expert findings

According to the forensic report, the cause of death was asphyxia leading to acute oxygen deprivation. Experts note that the outcome was influenced both by the victim’s chronic heart conditions and the manner in which he was restrained—compression of the chest and neck hold. The report specifically states that Abderrahim had been diagnosed with coronary artery atheromatosis and showed signs of drug use, but it was the police actions that were the decisive factor.

The examination of the body revealed multiple rib fractures, abrasions on the arms, and facial injuries. The doctors emphasize that restraining the lower body did not affect the outcome, with the key factor being compression of the chest and neck. In the case files, only the police officer who restrained the detainee’s neck remains under investigation. His colleague, who held the legs, is currently listed as a witness.

Legal consequences

The deceased’s family’s lawyer insists on holding both police officers accountable, considering their actions equally significant in causing the death. In his opinion, the second officer should be recognized as an accomplice or necessary accessory. Previously, in September, a preliminary report had already indicated the violent nature of the death and the role of suffocation, but now the findings have been confirmed definitively.

Context and reaction

The case has sparked widespread public outcry in Madrid and has become a topic of discussion among human rights advocates. Questions regarding the permissibility of detention methods and the accountability of police officers remain unresolved. In similar cases connected to official actions and their consequences for families, other stories also draw attention — for example, how a young artist from Ibiza shared personal experiences and family support after participating in a music competition, as described in detail in the feature on the influence of family on a career.
