Barcelona Cancels Stun Gun Purchase for Police Amid Political Disputes

City project on hold: Police demand answers as winners emerge from unexpected decision

Barcelona authorities have cancelled the purchase of stun guns for the city police. Officers and unions call this a mistake. The decision has sparked discontent and raised new concerns about public safety.

Barcelona has officially scrapped its plan to equip the city police with tasers. After lengthy debate and drafting of regulations, authorities have decided not to implement the new equipment for the remainder of the current term. The official reason cited is a lack of political consensus and the need to review operational protocols and internal controls. However, the decision has sparked frustration and disappointment among police officers and unions.

Street safety in Barcelona remains a pressing issue. In just the first eight months of 2025, police seized over 1,200 knives and other dangerous items—a 40% increase over the previous year. Despite this, the authorities are abandoning one of the few tools supported by both police officers and their unions.

Why the project failed

The idea to introduce tasers was discussed in Barcelona beginning in 2023. By early 2025, authorities had even approved the project at its first stage, with both police leadership and unions supporting it as a compromise between batons and firearms. However, the city council failed to secure a majority. The Socialists (PSC) were in favor, while their opponents from other parties voted against. As a result, the project was put on hold, and the purchase of the devices was removed from the city hall’s list of priorities.

In other Spanish cities, tasers are already widely used. For example, in Madrid, police have deployed them dozens of times in recent years, and the experience is considered successful. Across Europe and worldwide, such devices have long been standard issue for law enforcement officers. But in Barcelona, political disagreements have outweighed professional arguments.

Police and Union Response

The decision has caused dissatisfaction among city police officers. Unions say that authorities ignored the experts’ opinions and real threats on the streets. According to them, the lack of tasers reduces the safety of both police officers and residents, especially in situations where using firearms would be excessive.

Unions point out that modern protocols minimize the risk of misuse: cameras and defibrillators are mandatory, and usage is strictly monitored. They are convinced that with proper regulation, tasers are an effective and safe tool. However, city officials preferred not to take risks and have postponed the issue indefinitely.

Future Prospects

While the project remains on hold, police hope the discussion isn’t over. Many believe that sooner or later, Barcelona will have to revisit the issue of introducing tasers, as other European cities have already done. Meanwhile, tensions between the police and city hall continue to rise. Officers feel their opinions are being ignored, and the safety of residents is becoming a bargaining chip in political games.

With street crime rates still high and trust between the police and city authorities falling, rejecting new protective measures seems a controversial decision. The question of who benefits from this choice remains open—but it’s clear that many rank-and-file officers and Barcelona residents have ended up on the losing side.
