This year, the Westfield La Maquinista shopping center in Barcelona has been transformed into a true winter wonderland. Visitors are greeted by the city’s largest natural ice rink, covering 800 square meters, as well as a Christmas market inspired by the festive atmospheres of Vienna and Strasbourg. Organizers have focused on family-friendly activities: there’s something here for everyone, and even the most discerning guests are guaranteed to find holiday cheer.
The ice rink will be open until January 6. Anyone, regardless of age, can take part in skating. Tickets are available both online and onsite. Next to the rink is a cozy market with wooden stalls, twinkling garlands, sweets, and handmade souvenirs. It’s easy to find a gift here or simply enjoy the ambiance of a European Christmas.
Festive Entertainment
A special program has been prepared for children and their parents. Until December 24, kids can meet Papá Noel in person, and from December 27 to January 5 — the Three Kings (Reyes Magos). In a specially decorated hut, children can hand over their wish letters in person. In addition, a festive train travels around the center, adding a magical touch to every visit.
The hut with Papá Noel and the Kings follows a daily schedule so everyone has a chance to visit. On certain days, the doors are open from morning till night, while on holiday eves the hours are until midday. It’s a great opportunity to take memorable photos and soak up the New Year’s spirit.
Geronimo Stilton Immersive Show
Starting December 12, La Maquinista will host a unique theatrical adventure inspired by the Geronimo Stilton book series. A 1,000-square-meter plaza will transform into an interactive exhibition with themed rooms, quests, and performances in Spanish and Catalan. Tickets for this event are sold separately and cost €30.
For thrill-seekers, there’s a giant 12-meter-high slide. You can ride it for €6, with tickets also available online. This attraction is especially popular among teenagers and adults looking to add some excitement to the holiday season.
Free activities
In addition to paid attractions, the shopping center also offers free activities. The square features a massive Ferrero Rocher Christmas tree, a festive photo booth, and a charity vending machine where anyone can do a good deed. La Maquinista’s shops are open daily, including Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.—perfect for last-minute shoppers.
The shopping center is located in the Sant Andreu district. It’s easily accessible by metro (L1 and L9 lines), Rodalies commuter trains (Sant Andreu or Sant Andreu Comtal stations), or by bus (routes 400, 320, e21). This makes it convenient for residents of different parts of Barcelona and for visitors to the city.
Traditions and atmosphere
Near La Maquinista, Spain’s oldest Christmas market—held since 1786 next to the cathedral—will once again open in December. Here you’ll find nativity figurines, traditional decorations, Catalan tiós, Christmas trees, and handmade crafts from local artisans. It’s a place where history and modernity come together in one festive celebration.
The entire series of events is designed to give residents and visitors of Barcelona unforgettable memories. Organizers have prioritized safety and comfort: the area is well-kept, volunteers and staff are on hand, and the holiday program is updated weekly.
