In the coming years, Barcelona Airport’s main terminal (El Prat) will undergo a major renovation. By 2031 or 2032, its interior space will expand by approximately 70,000 square meters. Construction will begin in 2028 and is part of a large-scale project to modernize Catalonia’s main air hub.
Currently, Terminal T1 handles a record number of passengers and covers about 450,000 square meters. Once the work is completed, its area will increase by roughly 15%. To achieve this, the building’s facade will be pushed forward by 38 meters, taking over part of the space currently used for roadways. Additional space will also be added along the sides of the terminal.
The airport management has already warned that visitors will have to deal with certain inconveniences during construction. However, these measures are necessary to boost capacity and prepare the infrastructure for future growth in flights and passengers. The project has a budget of 700 million euros, with final details still being worked out.
The planned expansion will allow Barcelona Airport to maintain its status as one of the largest transport hubs in Spain and Europe. After the renovation, Terminal T1 will be able to accommodate even more travelers, while the upgraded infrastructure will enhance comfort and safety for all visitors to the city.
