In Spain’s capital, tensions have once again flared over the name of Begoña Gómez. The wife of the current prime minister has found herself at the center of the judicial system’s attention, but this time she chose not to appear in the courtroom. The proceedings are linked to the 2018 appointment of her adviser, Cristina Álvarez, which raised questions about the possible misuse of public funds.
The main allegation against Gómez is that her assistant may have been handling personal matters for her boss during work hours, using official resources, according to investigators. The court has obtained emails that, according to the investigation, support this claim. The Civil Guard’s upcoming report is expected to play a crucial role in the further development of the case.
This is not the first time Begoña Gómez has been summoned—it’s the fifth summons since the investigation began last year. However, current legislation allows defendants to be absent when the session is only to clarify the substance of the accusations. Government representatives emphasize that this decision does not violate procedural norms and does not affect the progress of the case.
In the near future, the judge will have to make a decision: either to close the investigation or to submit the case to a jury trial. Everything will depend on the conclusions drawn by experts after analyzing correspondence and official documents. In any case, the situation surrounding Begoña Gómez remains one of the most widely discussed topics in Spanish politics.
