Residents of Bilbao faced unexpected difficulties this morning: metro train service was paralyzed on one of the busiest sections. The problem occurred between the San Ignacio and Sarriko stations, when one of the trains suddenly broke down. This happened at the height of the morning rush hour, just as thousands of people were heading to work and school.
As a result of the incident, traffic between Indautxu and Cruces was completely halted for more than an hour. Crowds quickly began to form on the platforms, with many passengers initially unaware of what was happening. Some passengers, not having received any information, bought their tickets and only after passing through the turnstiles discovered there were no trains. They had to urgently find alternative ways to reach their destinationsβsome switched to buses, others called taxis, and the most determined set off on foot.
While technicians worked to fix the malfunction, delays were felt throughout the metro network. On Line 2, trains were operating only between Santurtzi and Cruces, while Line 1 service was disrupted at San Ignacio. Other sections also experienced schedule disruptions, causing irritation and frustration among passengers. At some locations, long lines formed for buses and taxis, and impatience grew on the platforms.
The situation was felt most acutely by those rushing to important meetings or classes. People complained about the lack of clear information and the fact that they had to spend extra money and time. Some recalled a similar incident that occurred last year, when the metro was shut down for several hours due to damage to the overhead lines. At that time, restoring the normal schedule took almost the entire day.
By ten in the morning, train service between San Ignacio and Indautxu was restored, although delays persisted for some time. Passengers hope such disruptions do not become a regular occurrence, as for many, the metro is the only fast way to get to work or school in the big city.
