Body of Spanish Woman’s Daughter Found in Indonesia After Tour Boat Tragedy

The mysterious fate of a Valencian family near Indonesia

The body of a Spanish woman’s daughter has been discovered in Indonesian waters. The family from Valencia was involved in a boat accident. Search efforts for the remaining missing continue.

Search efforts continue in the Indonesian archipelago for Spanish nationals missing after a tourist boat wreck. On Monday, rescuers found the body of a young woman identified as the daughter of Andrea Ortuño—one of the survivors of the tragedy. The family from Valencia had set off on what was meant to be a holiday cruise, which turned catastrophic off the coast of Padar Island.

A local resident spotted the girl’s body not far from where the boat sank. Relatives identified her as Lia, after which the body was taken to the hospital in Labuan Bajo for official identification. Indonesian authorities have mobilized additional resources to continue the search for the rest of the family.

Search operation ongoing

The operation involves police patrol boats, professional divers, and the KN Puntadewa vessel, staffed with 27 personnel including underwater specialists. They are joined by 70 previously deployed rescuers. The search area poses significant challenges: strong currents, depths of up to 200 meters, and limited visibility complicate the rescue efforts.

The boat carrying the Spaniards lost power due to engine failure. At that moment, it was hit by strong waves and went under at around 8:30 pm local time. On board were tourists from Spain and members of the Indonesian crew.

Fate of the missing

Seven people have been rescued so far, including the mother and sister of the missing children, as well as several crew members. The fate of four Spaniards – a father and three children – remains unknown. Among the missing are Fernando Martín, former football player and coach of Valencia’s women’s team, his son, and two children of Andrea Ortuño.

Relatives of the missing Spaniards expressed their gratitude for the support and urged not to stop the search efforts. Some family members have already flown to Indonesia to take part in the search operations and be close to the survivors.

Tragedy off Padar Island

The shipwreck occurred in one of Indonesia’s most picturesque yet dangerous areas. Padar Island is known for its steep shores and unpredictable currents. Tourist routes in this region are popular, but weather conditions can change rapidly, which played a key role in the tragedy.

The family from Valencia planned to spend their vacation exploring the local islands. Their journey was cut short when the vessel was caught in the heart of a storm. Despite the crew’s efforts, disaster could not be averted.

Response and support

The Spanish community in Indonesia and local authorities are providing support to the victims and their families. Labuan Bajo hospital has arranged medical assistance for the survivors, as well as psychological support for family members arriving from Spain.

Search efforts continue despite challenging weather conditions. Indonesian authorities have assured that the operation will not stop until all missing persons are found. Families are hoping for a miracle and await updates from the scene of the tragedy.
